CA Oil question 5w-20 or 5w-30 for 2010 RX-8

So when I had my 1990 RX-7 I clearly remember that I have from 10w-30 all the way to 20w-50 as the oil ranges depending on what I will be doing with the car.

Now on the RX-8 I read that the RENESIS engine were designed to use 5w-20, or 5w-30 depend on which country your at due to road conditions and driving habits.

My question is how much difference is 5w-20 to 5w-30?

The higher the numbers, the heavier/thicker the oil and less ability it has to flow. ... Thus, both oils have the same design viscosity when cold, but the 5W20 thins out more when hot compared to the 5W30. In actuality, because of colloidal properties, the 5W20 is slightly thinner when cold compared to the 5W30.

About 10

If you're in a hot climate go -30 and if you're racing definitely go thicker. For regular driving it doesn't matter all that much.

Enough - think of it as a warranty item - your engine warranty in the US requires you to use 5W20 only. 5W30 is better for lubrication (film thickness especially on the bearing/shaft and during all metal wear starting conditions cold). I'm using 5W20 - SN rating in my 2010 GT. I change it often ~ 1000-3000 miles/change.

But once my engine warranty is up I'll be using 10W50 to 20W50. This is the Series I oil choices from the AUS manual.

ok...cool...just got the 2010 RX-8 GT 6spd MT about a month ago, it was 51,932 miles now at 54,278 miles been long driving for the first 2 weeks cause I was moving...now 1 literary 5 minutes away from work.

I was going to do my first oil change since owning this car so I wanted to know...so seems like I should use 5w-20 to keep the warranty till 2018 or when I hit 100k...

My 1990 RX-7 lasted till about 200K miles went through 2 clutch replacements until the frame ended up with a crack then ended up junking it, sad day that day...but that's using the recommended 10w-40 oil...

Do you recommend 5w-20 High mileage oil after 100k on the RX-8?

I believes as long as it's 5w-20 it should be good, just don't give your car oil that it won't be able to handle, I did research as I asked questions to see what would be good to use for my rx8

Also a little off topic...I know on Series 1 you can grab the oil filter from the top of the engine...I don't seem to see it on the Series 2...you guys have any pictures so I know how to orient my self?

Yay! Another oil thread! Woo hoo!

I track my car 15 to 18 times per year. It is a 2011 and still under warranty. Here is what I do.

Every 3,000 miles, I take it to the dealer for an oil change. I ask for 5W30, and they happily oblige, because Texas. They use Castrol GTX. That puts the service in the car's history with Mazda and gets me a genuine filter for $20 to $25 depending on the coupon I have. I can't do it myself for that price.

I take it to the track 1 time, then I drain and fill it with Mobil 1 0W40 and drive on that for the remainder of the 3,000 miles. Since only about half is replaced at each oil change, I am running roughly 2.5W35 semi-synthetic at all times.

Nice: " I am running roughly 2.5W35 semi-synthetic"

It is on the drivers side, directly above the front subframe. You can't see or remove it from above.

The series 2 oil filter is accessed from under the car. This was one of the many things revised by Mazda for the series 2.

and you need to remove the aluminum shield/cover that covers up and protects the oil pan. The oil filter isn't obvious when looking up at the pan/engine - it has a metal V diversion to prevent the oil from running directly down all over the place when spinning off. Thank you Mazda engineers for that design.
