New from upstate NY
hey all, just wanted to introduce myself. Names RJ, ive recently had a 89 rx7 l. ended up selling it and regretting the decision that i made. So recently i was looking around for either another 7 or 240sx, which ever i could get the better deal on. ended up with a 89 240sx which i had then swapped a rb20 engine in it. Had it for a few months and traded the 240 for a 04 rx8. Glad that i can say that Im back into a rotary.

im unsure of how to post pictures but i do have a question if someone wouldn't mind chiming in here seeing as how i do not have enough posts to create a new thread in the tech tab.
i was told the engine was rebuilt, it is currently out of the car now. just looking over the engine it doesnt look as if it has been touched. should i just be on the safe side and rebuild the engine? or put it back in the car to see if it runs and do a compression test etc...

One way or other, you really should do a compression test if you are unsure of the engine's state unless you or one of your close friends/relatives is a rebuilder. Near as I can figure, the average cost of a rebuild once out of the car and if no main components are damaged is around $1700. (based on Banzai Racing price chart) but all main components like housings, rotors etc. would have to be carefully inspected and tolerances checked which could result in large variations of that basic price. All in all, if you have the ability to re-install the engine, I would say do so and get the compression test done by a rotary specialist then proceed from there.$200. or less for a test is a relatively cheap way of determining if you need a rebuild of your core or a replacement engine.

Just fyi I had Banzai rebuild the engine in my 7 and 8 and the $1700 is if absolutely nothing extra is needed ( if no housings, rotors, irons, bearings etc. are out of spec). I had them remove and reinstall both engines which was around $1200 each (reasonable I thought). That being said I had @ $2900 in just rebuilding the 4 port for the 8, and @ $4k in rebuild on my 7. Be prepared for the worst when budgeting for this.
I went through 6 irons, 6 rotor housings and 4 rotors to find parts in spec to build my 13b in my vert.
I agree with Mysterion find a way to get a compression test, alot cheaper than a rebuild if it isn't needed.
Good luck!

Is the engine in the car or out currently? I take it there are no service records with the car?
You might try calling/stopping by your local Mazda dealership and see what they have for service records in their system. It might give you some info about what rebuilds/replacements have been done.

i apologize for the late response.
To clarify, the engine is currently out of the car with no records of the rebuild or anything. So I'm just going by what I've been told whether it be the truth or a lie. By the sounds of it I may just reinstall the engine and buy a compression test kit for rotaries. If the engine is in fact need of a rebuild I will be doing the work myself. I have never rebuilt a rotary, but I'm sure there's more than enough information on the web to learn how to do so. The car was bought as a "weekend" car, i already have a daily.
