New Rx8 Owner in need of transmission

Just buying my first RX8 and looking forward to tinkering. The first order of business is a transmission. I understand from reading through the forum that rebuilding a 6 speed manual requires some expensive special tools so I will likely try to find a used one first. Is it as difficult as I have heard to rebuild a manual (I have rebuilt a couple of Chevy 4 speeds). What should I be looking for if I am scrounging the junk yards or searching craigslist. I am in Kansas City, Kansas.

Thank you for the offer. Shipping from California would probably be more than I can bbuy one for locally. Really hoping someone might be able to give me some guidance on what to look for when buying used.

Make sure it doesn't grind when shifting at high RPM. Seriously. There's not really a way to tell from outside whether or not a gearbox is going to be good or not.

Thank you. I was hoping for something like putting it in high gear, holding input and output and looking for play, something like that. If not, then I am probably best off buying from a yard that has a guarantee. At least that way if it isn't right I can get my money back and since I do all my own work I am just out my time. Buying from a private individual would be a crap shoot.

I did find a yard in Topeka that has several around $200 so maybe that is my best bet. I am really looking forward to having something to play with again. Was driving new company cars for too many years and now that I am retired I can pick what I want to drive.

I'd get one from a Series 2 (2009+) if you can swing it. It's a better gearbox.

You'll need to snag the shifter as well (and the shift **** if you care about the shift pattern matching what is printed on the ****). Clip the reverse and neutral switch wires from your old gearbox and splice them onto the S2 gearbox.

Not exactly sure where you are located, but I am guessing Kansas from your previous comment. I have a 2006 manual gearbox with a brand new clutch that I don't need anymore. Bought the car to do a drivetrain swap. Located in east tn.
