AK new rx-8 owner here

Well first thing first. My name is Jay and I now currently own a 2004 rx-8. Just bought it 2 weeks ago.
History...... well the previous owner didn't know how to take care of a rotary engine and failed to check or do any main thence on the engine regarding mainly the oil or whatever.... thus causing him having to buy a brand new engine.... I only paid 8500 for the car and it was booked around d 10500. Anyways the new engine coated him a good chunk of cash.

now that I finally got the car I felt better.... or at least I was until today. I filled her up on premium and then I started getting the check engine light.... I know the gas cap and oil cap was on tight. I even rechecked them... I'm still on the break in part for breaking in the engin. Anyways so the light of course has me a little bit concerned. So I'm taking it into the shop tomorrow.

Anyways I will throw up some pics a little later. And also I live in Alaska.... Fairbanks Alaska... if any of you guys know of some car clubs or rx-8 clubs here that would be cool

CEL? Get it checked. In the meantime, take an hour or two and read these informative threads:

Awesome, hope you take better care of it than the previous owner... My advice, read EVERY sticky possible till your eyes bleed. Then keep reading. It's mind consuming. Oh, and the car, and probably already owns your soul. They're addicting

Welcome and keep us posted about the CEL. I recently had the same experience with my RX 8 which also had the engine redone on it.

Yea well in this last month I have learned A LOT about rotaries.... considering I knew nothing bout them when I bought it.
But after the engine got replaced we thought that (some kind of eccentric or valve train?) Had to be relearned..... nope wasn't that cause cel flashed. so I got underneath her and did a full sweep... everything was plugged in and connected properly in her undercarriage... well except the exhaust. My borla exhaust flange was missing the spring and nut that helped bolted it to the cat.

So yea I thought that was the problem so I bought a new nut and spring tighten down..... yet again cel Was still flashing..... so I give in I went online and bought a new ignition coil for cylinder 1 and neespark plug wires...... looks like the only thing the shop replaced were the fuel pump engine clutch and spark plugs... among other things.... they put in iridium spark plugs? So yea this weekend Imma put in new ignition coil and wires... oh p code was P0301 so that's why I bought a single ignition coil.... ( also ki da tight on money )

Keep learning, Iridium's are the correct plug.

Welcome, IMHO since you are having misfires, and have a new engine, I would suggest changing all coils. About $90 more for all four.
If you can swing it, no sense half-a**ing it.

white burn marks on the bottom of coils dont mean ****.

the box you circled is for sound supression iirc

a flashing cel always means a misfire. get it fixed asap espically if you are running a cat.

200 is right.
You keep driving it with misfires & chain reaction bad things are likely, especially if you wait til July.

If you have tread left on tires, you might want to get those later, coils now.

A missfire will dump unburned fuel into the catalytic converter. This will cause the cat to either clog up or burn out. That's a $1500 expense for a new oem converter.

The device circled is used to quiet the sound of air in the intake. When my cat was clogged, it doubled as a place to collect oil that was drawn up into the intake due to excessive backpressure.

Getting the remaining 3 would be a good idea. The plugs could also be a problem, but you don't know until you inspect them. If you are buying new ones, there are leading and trailing plugs. They are different and have different part numbers. You will need 2 of each.

Yea... I bought the OEM NGK plug wires from advanced auto parts. So after o swap out the wires Imma clear the codes and try it again. Cause the cel will flash if I'm slowly starting to increase speed And rpms Usually happens between 4rpms and 6rpms

Absolutely. It just makes sense to do all 4 plugs, coils, & wires at the same time.

I had the same issues soon after buying mine.
I learned by reading the stickies and listening to the advice of the members here.
You should do the same if you want your car to last.
This forum is pretty much your best resource for your 8.

I did all 4, took my bad cat off & replaced it with a midpipe, cleaned ESS & MAF sensors, did the 20 pedal stomp, and now my 8 runs better than ever.

Good luck

Oh yeah, there is a diagram here somewhere for your ignition. Search for it.

Be SURE you don't get them crossed up!

I also find it helps to lable the old wires with masking tape before you take them off to match up the lengths with the new ones.

So if I'm looking at it from the left side and I see the coils and I count them left to right.... can someone send me the link to where the ignition diagram is at?
