New Owner looking for some info

Hi all,

I was given a very nice, bone stock 08 RX-8 GT recently and would like to get a bit more info. I currently still own an Acura Integra and learned about specialty tuning companies like Mugen, Spoon, ect which are all Honda based. In the world of the RX-8, are there companies like that too or is there just Mazdaspeed?

Sorry if this question was asked before, totally new here.

Welcome, sorry for the other rude poster.

There are threads here about tuning etc. Read through the new owners thread and maintenance schedule. Your car needs to have a rotary-specific compression test done to know the actual condition of your engine, this has to be item number one to do with any used rotary car. Then from there you can think about any mods. There are companies like Racing Beat, Pettit Racing, Pineapple Racing, Black Halo Racing, Rotary Performance and many others who do modding and sell modding parts.

RX8 Club’s recommended maintenance schedule, more comprehensive and proactive than Mazda’s schedule.
30,000 miles:
- Replace Ignition coils
- Replace Plug wires
- Replace Spark plugs
- Clean MAF (mass air flow sensor)
- Clean ESS (e-shaft sensor)
- Reset ESS profile
- Clean power steering connections
- Clean battery terminals and clamps
- Replace transmission fluid
- Replace coolant (Mazda FL-22 is highly recommended)
- Replace air filter
- Replace brake fluid (fluid in the brake lines AND the clutch line)
~$300 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

every 60,000:
...all 30,000, plus...
- Clean all chassis electrical grounding points
- Replace accessory belts
- Clean OMP lines
- Replace rear differential fluid
- Replace thermostat
- Clean / Straighten AC condenser fins
- Clean / Straighten oil cooler fins
- Inspect catalytic converter
- Clean / Inspect intake valving
- Consider / inspect all points in 90,000+ as well, many items fail early
~$130 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

90,000:
...all 30,000, plus any 60,000 not yet done, plus...
- Replace coolant bottle
- Replace radiator hoses
- Replace radiator
- Replace front O2 sensor
- Replace motor mounts
- Inspect clutch pedal assembly for flex / weld breaks
~$900 USD in parts if you shop smartly.
At 100k, anything original in the cooling system is really suspect and failure prone. It represents the biggest threat to your engine.

Black Halo Racing fanboy here. Charles makes great, high quality products and is super helpful in diagnosing issues and keeping your 8 running great.

Thanks for the reply!
Will get into reading about it all. As for compression test, I will be bringing it to a local mechanic or if worst comes to worst I'll bring it to the dealer.

Better becareful bringing the car to a local mechanic for a compression test.
A compression test on a rotary requires a special compression tester.

+1 to what WCS said. These cars require accurate work with the right tools.

As the two posters above said, don't bother with your local mechanic unless he's a rotary specialist. Take it to Mazda for a compression test as these things need a specialised tester and only Mazda dealers and rotary specialists tend to splurge on them.
