AL New 8 Owner, Former SA/FC/FD owner

New RX8 owner here. I haven't owned a wankel powered car in a number of years. My last wankel car was a 88 FC. It lived to about 210k miles on the original s4 engine. I ran the car on 87 and Premix. I eventually ditched the OMP completely and ran just straight premix.

I am planning on driving this car on the renesis until it gives up the ghost or I get all my parts lined up for an LS1 swap. No I don't give a rip roaring crap "that it kills the spirit of the rx-x.... 2/3 of my former rx's have been swapped, they were better for it. The rotary is good at one thing, WOT High RPM track stuff. It sucks nuts for street use. This car is gonna be a daily driver that can take 2 child car seats.

So the main things I am looking to find out, are

1) about 99% of the gas stations here sell the "up to 10%" ethanol crap. Can you premix it? Idemitsu says not use with ethanol fuel.

2) Anyone know of a decent off the shelf (advance auto, oreilly's, carquest, or ricerzone) premix that works well in the 13B-MSP? I ran Lucas in my old FC.

Pics:
Old car (the 800$ Wonder car, last 5 years and took over 100k miles of abuse)

MX5

2500$ RX8 (Yes I hate those ******* MSW bling bling wheels as much as you do.)

No I don't have any pics of the SA (maybe some poloroids somewhere... it was from before digital cameras) And the FD was owned by me for a grand total of 4 weeks before It was swapped and sold for a profit.

of course you can premix with 10% ethanol premium gas. I use Pettit Racing' ProTek-R premix with no problems. Most of America has only 10% ethanol premium gas, so most RX8 premix folks are using this gas with no gas issues.

A good two-stroke oil can be a substitute for Idemitsu or Pettit premix. Just watch the ash content. For an auto store brand to recommend, i can't help you, but someone reading your post will be able to answer that. BTW I have owned seven rotary Mazdas for street and track with over a million miles of rotary driving since 1973, NA and FI, and have never had the urge to swap out the rotary engine ever ! To each his own vices, but if you truly believe RXs are better off to have an engine swap you really don't want or need to be on this forum. Just my opinion .

I enjoy torque rotaries have none. I can live with a wankel for the time being but it will bet getting an engine with a better torque curve and better mpg with no need for forced induction

Hey Tanro you are in the wrong forum to be putting down the car. Having a RX8 issue that you need help with, yes we are all here to help you with our vast collective experience , knowledge , and sage advice. But you need to take your put downs of rotaries somewhere else . Really guy, don't waste our forum space with rants against the car !

Mazda put it in there for free? 2014 and still no v8 option for an RX or MX? I am not enough of a drift kiddy for a 240sx? The only other 4 door coupe with a decent back seat is Wrong Wheel Drive? (ION QC) To **** off rotards when I yank it out and scrap it? So I could take out the rotors and use them as totally bitching ashtrays? Oh yeah did I mention I like mazdas? You know if someone was selling a decently priced swapped RX8 I could have probably just bought that but, I figured no one was yet so I didn't bother looking. And also I just love pissing off rotary nut huggers. The engines rock, on a track at high revs. Or in an airplane. Hell even in a boat. But it just isn't something that works great on the daily commute @ 45 in the fast lane, in traffic, in sixth gear.

Funny damn thing is it just sat there with rx7s outside for about a year and people where stealing parts off those....

A bit of progress after work today. Cleaned and polished the headlights. Those things were grody as hell. Bit of brake fluid on a paper towel, scrubbed them clean. Then rubbed them vigoursly with dry paper towels. Then washed them. Then toothpaste, scrubbed in with old too brush. Let it dry a bit, then mushed around with dry paper towel. Then let it sit 10 minutes. Then wash it off with wet paper towel. Headlights don't look show room new. But for a half hour and or so and stuff you have around the house it looks nice.
Right side cleaned, left not cleaned.

Halfway through on left headlight

Toothpaste "Polish" masque

Done

I also started tearing into the front of the engine. Got an oil leak somewhere that needs to be addressed if I am going to drive this thing much. I also wanted to clean up the bay a bit, and clean the catch/fix the broken sightglass. Probably just going to take it off and run some bolts down in there. I need to get some steel wool to stuff the catch can with.

He is entirely entitled to his opinion, we don't censor or moderate opinions here, even if they aren't ones we agree with. If he was here only to troll about the RX-8 flaws, I'd boot him, but he is an owner of one and is working on it. So the car makes him angry, so what. He isn't the first forum member to hate the RX-8 or it's flaws.

I asked him to be more civil in expressing his opinion, and I remind the rest of you that you need to be civil with him as well.

I dont hate the 8. I like the Rotary, @ WoT. I love the rest of the car. The MX5 is easily my favourite car of all time, the FC being my second favorite. Still the wankel has no torque off boost. (RX8 is basically a stretched NC with a wankel and a hardtop.)

I have owned/maintained/driven several boosted cars.

They were all more of a headache than a bone stock s4 wankel. I enjoy driving cars, not looking out the window at my car waiting for it to be finished so I can drive it. American V8 seems to be the best compromize of speed, reliability, and price. V8+Low Weight RWD car than doesn't handle like a muscle car = lots of fun and many :D. If you don't like the idea of a V8 car, then most of my stuff will upset you, but first and foremost I have to put some work into restoring this rx8. It needs work, what cheap rx8 doesnt? I am hoping that once I put the v8 I can sell the renesis to someone who wants it for some kind of rx related project.

It would really be fun if you sold it to someone who swapped it into a Corvette.

Most stuff we do with cars, beyond having something suitable for the daily commute, is hilarious one way or another. If not, where's the fun?

I have a friend who's into Corvettes. She currently owns two, and her husband has one. I enjoy ragging her about how her cars have pistons.

Also about how her cars have slushboxes rather than real transmissions.

My daughter likes to rag me about how I'm a luddite, driving a manual rather than taking advantage of technology and getting a transmission that shifts for me.

Not gonna be for sale anytime soon. Probably 6+ Months before I even start to think about pulling the wankel. Only things I have for the swap ATM are the wiring harness, pcm, camaro brackets, and camaro oil pan. I still need an aluminum 5.3, t-56 or tr6060, ls1 intake, car injectors, mounting solution, headers, fuel system, canbus translator/convertor, driveshaft and probably 100 trips to the parts house and hardware store.

I am looking at least 6 months out on having the powertrain ready to mount, and probably 2 months of working on it after that. Will post the renesis when I get ready to pull it, after I find a local mazda dealer to do a compression test. Pretty sure it has good compression, pulls like a 12k 09 I drove, no hot start issues. Only smokes a little on cold starts, doesn't seem to burn any coolant so I think it is just condensation or overly rich condition.
