just curious, my daughter would like modern amenities in her 8. my question is, do all 8's have the navigation wiring (unused plugs) even though not equipped? If so, I would like to integrate a tablet.

 

Your best bet is to check out the 2 audio subforums. Use Google search if you can't find what you are looking for using the built-in search. (example: site:rx8club.com navigation system)

Several guys have integrated tablets and otherwise replaced the built-in navigation system. Some have added tablets to what is already there. I don't think there is much in the car you can use for that application, but a lot can be done if you are willing to run some wires.

 

Just to add to that statement. Even if you could I would advise against it, as the factory Nav system is one of the worst I have seen IMO. Add to the fact that the latest maps you can get hold of are from 2008. If you don't have the patience or skills for the tablet option, get a nice head unit with built in NAV and a Metra Kit and call it a day. Just my .02

Pick up a Nexus 7 3G/LTE model and she can not only have Google Maps, but a hotspot built into her car.

Grab a GROM IPD3 + BT module, plug it into the back of her stereo and she can also have full audio integration between the tablet and the factory HU.

 

Thanks, I emailed the company who makes the dvds and got the same response. The '08 is the last available dvd. I was hoping that the cars not outfitted with the nav used the same vehicle harness, hoping the nav was a port installed option. After a lot of reading, it doesn't appear to be the case. I wanted to install a nav hood with the tablet retrofitted and have the plug in availability for the motor, that's why I was asking if there were unused plugs. Still may install, I haven't decided whether or not to gut the bose and go with the aftermarket setup. The tablet seemed to be the least invasive, and closest to factory appearance. I have good fabrication skills, I just don't have the access to the equipment I need.

 

I have the complete harness, the DVD player, GPS antenna, etc but I'm not planning on selling any of it. I may post the housing at some point as I clean up things.

The NAV on our car is absolutely horrid. Trust us when we tell you as much.

The install using the retractable nav box is a breeze... about 8 screws in all and you can fish USB power from the fuse box (with 12V to 5V converter inline) easily.

 

Thanks shell, I don't know how I got the smiley at the bottom of my post, lol. That sounds like a good plan, I was just hoping for the motorization.

 

So you can find a NAV housing and with a little bit of soldering wire it up to retract and open with the key. There's a really decent thread on the forum that covers the process.

Getting a 7" tablet to fit inside of it isn't as difficult as you'd think... A dremel and some metal strapping from Lowes is all you need to get it mounted.

 

I've spent a few days reading the tablet threads. I'll be able to capitalize on the information there.
