multiple coil failures? why cant i post!
Hey guys, So I have a 2004 rx8 6 speed. I bought it with a blown engine. Replaced the engine with another one, new spark plugs and wires, tried two different e-shaft sensors, and I don't seem to be getting any spark. Definitely getting fuel. I tested one coil lead and as soon as I turn the key, it's getting over 12 volts. I also tested the resistance of the coil itself (disconnected) and it got a 0 reading. When I try to arc out a spark plug connected to everything, I'm getting no spark. So all this being said I am led to believe that I need a new coil. Is it possible that all 4 coils could be completely pooched and not getting any spark.. all at once? Or should I be searching for another issue. The car was sitting for several months before I picked it up, there are the burn marks on the backs of every coil, and they are the same coils as were on the car previously. I understand that yes the coils are in need of being replaced. so don't rip on me. I'm just looking for a second opinion to make sure I haven't overlooked anything. Thanks.
Also why the **** can't I post in the tech forum? Is there a certain number of posts before I can post in the big boy forum? Please let me know the number I need so I can go flood the hell out of this thread once we're done with it.

You will need new coils regardless, so it wont hurt to swing by your local autozone/advanced and pick up a new set. I haven't seen many cases where all 4 coils go out all at once, but it certainly is possible if the last owner never took care of the car. Also, testing resistance of the coil itself doesn't really confirm that the coil will function properly as you are technically only testing the resistance across the ignitor circuit.

One coil failure can accelerate the failure of the other coil on that rotor. That being said, new coils every 30k is a long standing recommendation. Coils can cause problems long before they stop producing a spark.

The spamming thing was just a joke...
Anyone know where I can get a set of coils in Vancouver BC for less than 80 bucks a piece plus tax? that's what my auto parts store wants....
