misfires & too rich to lean

2008 rx8 misfires has a rough idle and cuts out through the rim band. I am having some misfire issues and I just put a racing best dual resonated midpipe on it due to a clogged catalytic converter. my car is a short model with an automatic. any thoughts would be appreciated. also getting a bad value from the too rich too lean sensor. I want to here the midpipe did not cause this... Dealer wanted like 1600$ for new catalytic. It's got a new engine with like 1600 miles on it new coils and plugs and wires at the same time. All done by the dealer. Since I have owned it (3 months) I have put me brakes on it and the midpipe. I have also had the dealer replace the motor mounts.

Turn the key to the on position. Quickly and repeatedly tap the brake until the battery gauge reacts to reset the fuel trims. Drive it a few cycles and see if it improves.

That's the first thing I'd try anywho

Tried the 20break pedal stomp... Lol
I read when you do this the oil pressure Guage was supposed to sweep...

Mine did not...

On my next short drive to work like 10minutes after a 15 minute warm up.

Still reports too rich too lean sensor but seemed to have more power with only 3 misses. 1 on cylinder one and 2 on cylinder 2

If the gauge doesn't sweep, you haven't reset anything. It likely didn't register 1 or more brake triggers. Try again, but don't bother counting, just keep going till it sweeps.

Pushed the pedal like 300 times... Lol
No sweeping of any kind.
Also dont have a battery Guage but I heard the oil pressure Guage was supposed to sweep. But only if you have the new ecu flash from Mazda. I dunno hhhhuuuhhh

I had misfires too and own a 04 the oil gauge did sweep but only half way and it cleared my misfire. Just a guess but you keep mentioning to rich to lean check you O2 in bank1 you could have hit it on in stall of your mid pipe that O2 is what reads to rich and lean. And look at your MAF too could be dirty and not reading right making misfires. Or and not unheard of perhaps faulty coil?

Well, if you aren't on the MSP16 Flash from Mazda, that is it's own problem that needs to be resolved ASAP. That was released in April of 2008. nearly 5 years of driving without it isn't healthy for your engine.

If you ARE on MSP16, then yes, the oil pressure gauge will sweep and you still aren't triggering it properly. Either your brake pushes are too light (it's more than just a light tap), too slow (they have to each be within X seconds from the prior or the cycle breaks, and all have to be within 20 seconds total), or you aren't getting the beginning circumstances triggered correctly to get the ECU to start counting brake pulses.

Update... Took it too the dealer today and they said that the double rest after midpipe from racing beat was more than likely causing it to run too lean and thus causing the misfires... I kinda wanna call BS ... But have no proof otherwise.

Is there a way to tell if what update is on the ecu? Also Mazda would probably wanna charge me If I don't have the most recent update... Correct?

$1600 is just way too much money for a catalytic and I see people running midpipes all the time no problem.

The coils and plug wires and plugs are supposedly all new along with motor mounts and motor. All of which now have 1,700 miles on them. Motor mounts even less like 300 miles not that they matter.
Also new break rotors all the way around with ceramic pads. It's an 08 automatic

Opening up the airflow will change air/fuel, so technically the pipe is the cause. But the trims just need to be reset.

My bad on getting battery/ oil gauge mixed, I have only needed to reset once.

Stomp the pedal fairly hard and quickly (3-4 taps per second or so) key to on, car not running. If it still doesn't work, call a Mazda dealer about getting the newest firmware flash.

Mazda will need to connect up to get the flash, I am not sure if there another way of telling. It should be the typical diagnostics charge to reflash, around $89 at most dealers. Yeah, $90 for 3 minutes of work with a computer. It's BS, but it's the only option if you aren't still within the warranty period.

Some dealers will do it for free, but don't count on it.
