Looking to sell
Good Day All,
I am coming to experts with some questions. My son bought an RX8 (well actually I bought it) not long ago. I believe the the years is 2004 but can confirm. I am told the engine is blown and really would rather not invest in this car. I am sure it could be a good car for someone. He is in one state and I am in another and would ship the car if it was to benefit selling it. He wants to junk it but I hate to see that loss.
Any suggestions? Offers (please)
Thanks All - any input is appreciated.

Shells without a working engine is worth about US$1k almost without exceptions. Maybe a tiny bit more if your shell is in immaculate condition.
And have your confirmed the engine is actually blown with a proper compression test? Sometimes people think the car has a blown engine, only turns out to be an ignition issue that's easily fixable.
A reman from Mazda is about US$3.5k or so + core charge. With labour you are looking at US$6k all said and done.

Cant confirm
I was "told" it was taken to a shop and he was told the engine was blown. He said it threw a rod. Now in my defense, I know computers not cars so I wouldn't know unless a mechanic told me.
Thanks

the only way to know if the engine is "blown" is with a rotary specific compression check.
seriously tho read the new owners thread

Gonna be honest, I didn't even know what "threw a rod" means because that will really only be a problem if your piston engined car is boosted to hell or you are a hot rodder. On a modern, stock engine, I don't really think it happens.
Anyway, like sonic said, you need to find someone else. You can use this list to see if there is a rotary shop near you.

For people who think this mechanic is a joke, I have seen worse.
Just yesterday, I had a dude I know in an online chat tell me that he had a "mechanic" open the coolant reservoir on his BMW(which has a higher running coolant temp than most other brands) when his engine is already warmed up. He is lucky he didn't burn his face off.
And the said mechanic proceeded to tell the owner the coolant level is low after the scorching coolant shot out all over the place.
Seems like anyone can just call them a mechanic nowadays...

Amazing to think that anyone with mechanical aptitude, that is being paid as a "mechanic" would use a term like "threw a rod" on a mazda RX of any generation. I cannot believe any "mechanic" has not heard of a Mazda Rotary engine.
Now if he said "think of it like it threw a rod" - as in Terminal irrepareable condition !!
