Just bought an 05 RX-8 and fucked up 5 minutes after driving away from the dealer

So, I needed fuel and stopped at the gas station pulled up next to the pump, then shut off the engine. Then I realized that the gas tank was on a different side than I pulled up to so I went to restart the engine just seconds after shutting it off. I guess I flooded it but not sure of that. I ended up waiting about 20 minutes before trying to start it again and it finally did start. How do I prevent this? You're supposed to stop the engine when refueling. I'm also concerned because I deliver pizzas part time (yeah, I know the money sucks but I like doing it). I don't know how practical the rotary is for a job like that when you come back after a delivery you may need to take another one back out in a couple of minutes or sometimes it may be 2 hours before your next delivery. I'm confused about the whole stopping/starting procedure. Does anyone have any advice on how I can make this car work for me? Do I need to find a different part time job?

Did you get a compression test done prior to buying the vehicle? If not, it might be worth your while to know that. I know low compression scores are linked to starting issues.

Yeah a normal RX8 should be able to stop/restart fine. Your engine may have low compression, which means you need a new one. Not being able to restart when warm is a classic sign of a failed engine. Compression test definitely a next step.

You can get a refurbished engine from Mazda or folks like Pineapple Racing, Rotary Resurrection, Pettit or others.

Call the dealer, tell them you are having issues and they need to fix it. You should have had a compression test before buying the car - that is standard operating procedure for any rotary car. Sounds like your engine is toast to me. I had this problem also, I would just leave the car running while refueling or going into wawa.

As much as I hate to say this, I have to be realistic here. This is probably not the best car to make money doing deliveries. Not so much because of your issues starting the car. But the car is just too uneconomical for that type of job. I could see myself going through a couple of tanks of gas a night pretty easily doing deliveries.

No mods on the car other than illegal window tint that I need to have removed before I can get a current inspection sticker. Right now the inspection sticker has expired last month. I'm not sure if I just want them to only strip the window tint or have them put on legal tint. I have been able to start it several times since this incident with no problems. I have to let the engine crank a little longer than I'm used to in order for it to start. I'm not sure if this is normal. I also have found that the heat does not work. It was cold today so I turned the heat all the way to the max but cold air comes out of the vents. Any thoughts on why it would not give me heat? I think the problem with not starting is solved, now I need to work on the heater problem. I was going to buy a practical Ford Fiesta that was a 2013 model. My father said he would loan me $4000 to buy it but when it came time to pay for it, he told me he only had $2000. The car was $10000. I had $6000 to make the purchase. If he had loaned me the $4000 I would be driving a newer car with fewer miles that was in mint condition. After being humiliated telling the dealer I would buy the Fiesta only to be told that I couldn't afford it, I decided to hell with taking a loan from my father and I bought the best car I could get with what I had. I paid $5000 for the RX-8. It's in good condition with 83K miles. That was the lowest mileage vehicle I could get and it looks awesome. I want to love this car but I think there's some bugs to work out. I did buy an extended warranty that covers anything related to the motor and transmission as well as plenty of other things. It's 3 months or 4,500 miles and only has a $100 deductible. I paid $95 for the extra warranty. I hope I didn't buy a lemon as I only have $1000 to my name and haven't been able to work since my accident in the Miata a little over 3 weeks ago.

Hey i've had my 8 for over a year now and have picked up some useful knowledge along the way.

For the flooding issue: Your car should definitely not have a problem with going from running to off back to running again. Even though hot starting or flooding can be indicators that something is wrong with your engine, it's important to keep in mind that it could possibly be the ignition system. That would be the ignition coils, spark plugs, and wires. One of the biggest things that people recommend before purchasing a rotary is to get the engine compression tested. Be aware that Rotary Engines require a different compression test than Piston Engines. Results should show an RPM aswell as 3 Compression Numbers per Rotor.
For Example: Rotor 1: 7.5, 7.6, 7.5
Rotor 2: 7.2, 7.3, 7.3
250 RPM
Starting with a compression test first then moving onto repairs will help make sure you're not throwing money at a failing engine.
That being said, all of the stuff that I just said could be found in this thread here.

https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-f...ot-8-a-202548/

You should read through those two stickies a bunch of times. More often than not, any thing you are experiencing or might be experience will show up.

For the Heat issue: I actually had no heat when I first purchased my 8 and referred to this thread here https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-...ontrol-158200/

After i soldered the mentioned joints in the DIY Thread, I've never had a heat issue again.

I second spending the money to get a compression test from a Mazda dealer. If you do fail, you can then bring the failing results and hopefully the extended warranty you purchased will cover the cost of a new motor. As stated above, this will keep you from throwing money at something that might be on its last leg. I would do this ASAP as 3 month is not a lot of time.

Just because I didn't noticed it mentioned, always let the car get to full operating temperature score shutting off, if it was pretty cold out and you babied it to the closest gas station, maybe that was your issue.

With premium fuel prices these days, it will be costly as a delivery car, but you need to always use 91+.

If the soldering trick doesn't work, the heater core itself could be in need of flushing, watches a.video on YouTube by 'chrisfix' on it, seemed reasonably easy.

Get the compression tested, so if it does need a motor, you make sure that warranty pays for it, hope it doesn't come to that, but a fresh motor wouldn't be bad in the big picture either I suppose lol
