Disconnect the battery. That's about the only other way.

As for readers, I think a lot of people, myself included, use a $15 bluetooth one this:
Amazon Amazon

.. and a smartphone with DashCommand or Torque apps for reading.

There are a few codes, specific to RX8's systems, that aren't part of the normal OBD2 lexicon. For example, OMP codes may not read correctly, and you may not be able to access ABS & EPS codes. But a tool that would guarantee all of those is hundreds of dollars. So..

I use BlueDriver. https://www.bluedriver.com/products/...iver-scan-tool

it connects easily to my iPhone and picks all the data. You can do live recording for road tests and freeze data. It’s online database for codes is constantly updated. I paid less than $100 for mine a few years ago.

Disconnect battery. Tool I use is OBDLINK SX, which I use with OBD wiz on my laptop for diagnostics or use with VersaTune in order to mess with the ECU. A 20 dollar cable that goes into a PC can do wonders.

4 years later I'm really hoping the OP isn't still dealing with the same CEL but thanks guys for the responses.
Fortunately there are now a lot of relatively inexpensive options available for wireless bluetooth OBD scanners.
