How much for a new engine?

I love my rx-8. It runs fine I’m just curious if I sink a lot of money into it (upgraded and body kits) and the compression goes bad. How much does it normally cost to buy a new one and put in? Separate estimates for the purchase and labor please. Thank you guys!

If you need someone to do all the work, 6-7kUSD all in?
If you can do the install yourself, which isn't particularly difficult, rebuilt known good engines start at about 3.5-4.

You can check your local Mazda dealer or one of the reputable rotary rebuilders like RotaryResurrection, Pettit, Pineapple racing, etc. There is a list somewhere on the forum.

If it runs fine now invest your money in preventative maintenance. Coils, cat, etc. Read RX8help.com

Some good info here.

https://rotaryresurrection.com/rx8-faq/

Notice the section on compression numbers after a rebuild and having the correct expectations. A rebuild with used parts could see you restoring compression to a level BELOW what Mazda considers minimum. This motor, may run fine and make good power but still down on compression.

If you have good parts could be as cheap as 2k for the rebuild. Mazda reman engines are around 4k. A rebuild with new rotor housings and irons could be 6k. All of this assumes you remove the engine yourself.
