AB First Rx8 so excited!

Hey Guys, I got a 2005 GT Sunlight Silver Rx8 with 5k on the engine and 124k on the body! I need to replace the brake pads and Dif seal which the parts just came in today. after that all thats left to do is to change the shocks. A couple of things i was planning to do was

1 change all the outside lights to LED which after looking through other threads found it will roughly cost me 500-600 Canadian based on which I get.

2 change the emblems to black versions. I found both the front and back flying wing mazda Emblem and the word Mazda for the Rx8 in Black. Still need to find the word Rx8 in black cant seem to find one. I don't just want to dip them either i want to find all the parts or take the silver pieces of and paint them a chrome black. I just dont like the fact its Silver on silver.

3. I bought some underdash lights that I just wanted to try out. I also was planning to buy a bluetooth/aux system but turns out one of the owners before installed buy a Adapter online.

4. plan to change the exhaust to a race beat exhaust system.

Other then that i bought Idemitsy Premix and I am using Castrol 5w20.

Was wondering what you guys think of plans and if there is anything i shouldnt to or should do. Btw I am also planning to do some of the first $100 dollars with the Rx8 fixes

So excited to be a part of this Forum!

Yeah. Skip all of everything you said until you have a healthy compression test. Next, service. Don't bother with exterior stuff if that engine needs help. Coils, Plugs, and Wires should be top of the list, along with a full service of oil and everything else as long as compression checks out. At this point in time it's probably time to go over the cooling system in detail and make sure everything is still flowing correctly and freely and ALL the coolant hoses should be replaced at this time if they haven't before.

Read the "Congratulations! You just bought an 8 thread!" Before doing anything else. Really. Stop and make sure compression checks out, then proceed with coils plugs and wires if you don't know when they were changed last. Unless it's got a BHR kit on it, then at that point in time you can get away with plugs and wires.

+1000 ^^^
Just make sure your car is healthy first.

600 bucks in lights sounds crazy, but whatever floats your boat!
Personally, I would spend that money on an AccessPort, MazdaManiac tune and a Sohn adaptor for maximum reliability.

Also rustproofing, because it's winter :o

Welcome aboard, брато

Plugs being good isn't good enough. If your coils and wires are more than 20-30k miles old they all need changing too (unless the car has BHR kit). Any weak link in your ignition system can lead to cascading engine and cat failures. Total ignition system health is most critical in a rotary engine. Ignore any part of that at your own costly peril.

If original coils and wires, replace along with plugs. If unknown, replace anyway. Why? Safe than sorry. Rather have a decent spare set you can throw on with the ones you pulled off than a set you think might work that'll lead to a blown engine. We say this from experience, not from trying to get you to spend money.

My .02 cents.

Generally speaking the ranking goes like this - BHR for Coils wires and plugs (package deal) Great warranty, great service, great product. Sakebomb is another LS2 Style coil conversion package, but, that one's been up in the air as far as I can understand. Revision C coils are the "last" OEM coil style, from Mazda. We know they work for at least 30k, some reports go farther from my understanding. Beyond that, you can ebay it, but know you are getting what you pay for. As soon as you start cheaping out on these cars, they start cheaping out on you.

Sounds good I was just checking if those were good. And I read over the engine swap papers and they changed the coils and plugs and that was 5000km ago

If they were OEM, and I mean "Dude has box that says OEM from Mazda on them" then I'd think you'd be fine. At that point it's up to you to decide to do it for your own peace of mind.

As a lot of the forum members here already mentioned engine health is NUMERO UNO! Also, since you live in Alberta get rid of the catalytic converter. A BHR resonated midpipe would be an excellent mod to do before the LEDs. Just my 2 cents.

is there anything other then that BHR resonated midpipe that you would recommend to put? I was looking at the Ren V2 race pipe on racingbeat.

If you get a resonated one just be aware that the cheapie resonators can get blown out pretty easily and some even rattle when they grenade internally. Also with no cat you will have a CEL on. Unfortunately, most people have not had good luck with extenders since the car is very sensitive and in my case even the shortest extended will just change the code from catalyst efficiency to sensor response time.

So turns out that the reason for the engine swap was cause of the cat and mazda put in a new one. So I think I'm gonna change it and just sell the cat since there has literally been 5000km driven on the cat

Hmm okay so is there any actual way to put it in and not have the CEL on?

I run the BHR Catted midpipe because they do emissions testing here in Colorado, and they also do what's called "fast pass" where if you hit it 3 times and you pass you don't have to re-test or get fines. I'm also running BHR coils, and have had no issues.

Don't forget to change those plug wires also. Bad or old plug wires can be just as dangerous as old coils and plugs.

If you buy a cobb accessport you can 'hide' that code so it won't throw the CEL.

There's also this rather hilarious device that, if I had to guess, will probably just throw the same code as a regular extender:
