Has anyone in the states got a fenderist widebody kit for their rx8?? I searched the forums and didnt find anything, im hesitant on buying it because its out of russia and i dont want anything to get held up on the import, and theres some troubling reviews.

with that being said does anyone have one for sale in the states? My 8 has a decent amount of rust along the side skirts and this kits the only one that ive seen that will alow me to cut all of that out and still attatch the kit! Thanks for your time!!

 

they didn’t tell you 1. it’s fiberglass and would be impractical zoom-zoom video gamer juice that would be busted up in short order on the street and 2. it’s from Russia; which good luck with that.

1 its abs plastic, 2 ive put widebody kits on a few different cars that were fiberglass and never had a problem with em, 2 years on my mk3 supra daily and not once had a crack etc, if you get good kits then theyll last, and 3 yes its from russia thats my number one concern, but theres mixed reviews on there buisness, just windering if anyone on here has ordered from them

i like that but i need something with some beefy side skirts that connect to the rear fender flares! Ill post pictures of the rust im dealing with, perks of living in the rust belt of America! Thanks for the lead though!!

 

doesnt really leave me much room to attach side skirts once everything is cut away and cleaned up thats why im looking at that kit specifically because the side skirts attach to the front and rear fender flares

 

If your drivetrain is GTG you may be better off finding a clean roller to swap everything in to. I think the end result would be quite a bit better. Your money and your car, just my .02....

 

That body's kinda finished. A body kit isn't a solution for missing metal. +1 to finding a clean body to put your good parts into.

 

may just say **** it and use it as a drift missle until the bodies done for then swap over to a roller! Thansk for the input!

 

not sure i have ever heard an 8 described as a "missle", but the good news is it will continue to get lighter as the body eats itself. Recommend you verify that the front and rear subframe and suspension pieces are structurally sound and not full of rust. As long as that is good, send it...

 

yeah the frame itself is fine its jut the body eating itself away worse then cabin fever

my bad man ill try to be more considerate! Im a tattoo artist brother we all swear like sailors, hard not too when its our daily linguistics lol, to me and my people its a term of endearment or a comma, 🤣and yeah i plan on trying to save it, theres a few at the local yards that are clean, may have to just cut and weld some new panels on, appreciate it man! May just bite the bullet and order the kit, if it comes it comes if not whats 1200 bucks 🤷‍♂️

 

I've never formally done body repair, but do have some background in corrosion, I will say it would be a gamble to toss money at this chassis of yours if you're wanting to clean it up. (Mostly the rockers are the biggest concern and likely the first area to flare back up with rust even with side skirts judging by the condition).

If you really do want to go this route I'd suggest looking for a clean rolling chassis. It'd be a shame to put a lot of time and money in this car to watch the rust come back within a few years.

 

as far as i can see the rust is only eating the body panles, i have kight surface rust on the undercarriage but thats it, wire brushed and painted all of that already, i almost wonder if it was a manufacturer problem, maybe they didnt seal the paint correctly or something, im nit too concerned with the rust itself, i can cut and weld panles onto it and give it some good ol kitty hair and bondo, i really just want to see if anyones ordered from fenderist, or if anyone has seen any similar kits sold here in the states! Appreciate it though!

 

If you are going to repair rust you have to cut/weld/replace panels. All that rust is likely much worse behind the panels which means no level of surface treatment work is going to resolve it. Almost always the rust you see on the panel has been developing from behind for some time. If you actually replace and cut out all rusty metal with sufficient clean cutaway then the car should avoid rust in those areas as long as if it was new. There is no reason for the rockers to rust quickly within a few years if the job is properly done as I have described and the car is properly taken care of and not driven through constant salt brine without washing.

I would be more concerned about rust appearing in other areas. That means that you can’t just replace a couple visibly bad panels and think you’ve nipped it in the bud. You really have to strip the car down and address it all. Otherwise you will continue to be doing more rust repairs in other spots. Considering these cars are relatively cheap (for now) it does seem like a smarter financial move to find a clean body. Maybe things will be different in 10-20 years as these cars become rarer at which point more people will consider restoring them.
