Exhaust failed in the inspection.

Now what? Got a 05 RX8 shinka model gray with lots of small things to fix. So I worked my hat off about a month or so to get it running perfect and today it failed the inspection.

Exhaust System
Muffler - F
Any Piping - F
Manifold - P
straight pipe with magnflow exhaust.

I'm in Maryland 21227 any help will be welcome. Just don't have any more money to buy a new exhaust system for inspection.

C'mon man,

"straight pipe with magnaflow exhaust"

You gave yourself the reason why you failed the inspection. No catalytic = fail emissions. Looks like your catback also may have caused you to fail inspection.

Thank God, someone beat me to it before I spoon fed this guy...

Weird the catback would fail him, though. But I've only lived in places that don't believe in emissions testing, so I don't know what all they check (and hope to never know).

If you have a straight pipe you will fail an inspection.

Check the Classified section to see if anyone's selling their OEM cat.

I do but the thing was. Older guy did the inspection so I called a friend and he referred me to his "bud" @ Midas so he can have a look in my exhaust. Well bad lucky me cuz he said if I had brought the car at first to him he would pass because by the book my exhaust still legal and the only way to find out if the illegal is to cut open and check inside of it " this is what he just said to me.

Also the new mechanic took a picture and send to his state trooper friend or office to see what they have to say.

He told me the the only reason he haven't done a new Inspection is because it can raise a red flag in the system and I could get in trouble for that. That was today.

I think I made some of you confused when I said straight pipe. I snapped a pic before I left the new location.

This is what I got TurboXS exhaust.
My apologies if I made it look like I had something straight from the motor to the end.

they only check what is visible with a flashlight. at least what I saw today the hole thing. I posted a picture from my exhaust, it still no visible for everyone "guess because I'm a new RX8 fan now" lol

I got my 8 not drivable.

No headlight -
I got pair used for cheap polished it now looks new.
Rotors and Pads was gone. New Drilled PowerStop Rotors and Ceramic pads
Caliper I rebuild myself still need to be painted.
New Tires 225/45zr18 all around
Stock Rims was a lot light scratches. I restored all 4 rims and painted it in Matte Black
Power Rack was gone. replaced with a used one with 50k on it now works like a champ.
Had Air into the cooling system I had no Idle at all.
Radio never turned on - the face place was a little loose "if anyone had the same issue radio not turning on just tight all the screws from the main unit to the face plate and problem solved.
New Battery
Flushed Radiator and had all the oil in the car changed.
Both left and side fender inner panel replaced.
shift **** cover replaced with carbon cover looks.

RX-8 stinks without a cat. I think anyone inspecting your car should notice the stank.

Drilled rotors are for looks only. They are not really useful.

If you have to buy a complete stock exhaust to pass inspection then you do. There are no ways around it. Personally I prefer the sound of the car with the stock exhaust. Its very quiet when cruising but when you're into it, the exhaust note is fantastic, like a saw through a fiberglass board. I'm sure you can find a reasonably priced original exhaust system. People toss them all the time.

Once you spend $450 you can get a waiver as long as nothing is missing. I would think you could buy a cat (450+) and if you don't pass apply for a waiver.

I don't know why your muffler would fail, unless you don't have one or it has holes in it. Maybe it was too loud? I don't know the rules in MD but google shows many people passing with aftermarket exhausts as long as they have a cat.

I don't know where my last post went. again with update.

I have TurboXS Catback. I went to a new Inspection place today after talk with one of my bud with the same catback.
They failed me for Exhaust and they said my rear drive tail light was broken.

Now thing's getting interesting. This new place Midas, the guy told right away they shouldn't fail for those two things because the rear tail light is cracked in the clean side not in the red brake signal because the tail light is more like clean.
The Catback should pass in any inspection location in MD. The new mechanic spoke with the state trooper responsible for all this inspection thing and he police officer told him that everything was fine so instead going back to the first place i went for inspection I paid this new location and they did for me in another words I passed and I'm very happy.

as you can see under. sorry if I made everyone confuse when i said straight pipe because the guy told me that i had nothing inside my catback. so much bs. the first place tried to get $$ from me.

I'm thinking going back where I did the first inspection and ask for my $$ back.

With that setup there's no reason that you should have failed in the first place. Glad it got corrected.

It looks like whoever installed your exhaust (or someone before them) forgot to put back the aft transmission tunnel brace. There's a second one that goes across where the catback and midpipe meet, just forward of the fuel tank.

with my TurboXS midpipe, the rear brace interfered with the exhaust hangar. I had to bust out the MAPP gas torch and bend it a bit to make it fit with the brace installed. Looks like OP's installer did the opposite.

It shouldn't make any sound, it's just a brace. Google "rx8 underside", you'll see it.

That could be the sound of the hangar vibrating against the PPF.
