Do you guys really wait till the car it at normal operating temp before driving it or you drive it and just go easy on it meaning nothing higher than 4000 rpms until its at normal temp?

im asking because the engine warms up quicker when you drive it easy. And if you just let the car idle till its at normal temp thats more time the engine running rich and less oil at the chamber correct?

 

no need to let it idle for prolonged periods.
just keep it under 4k until water and oil temps are above 150° and you should be fine.

 

I let mine idle for a minute or two: until the idle drops to 1500. Then I go easy on it until fully up to operating temperature.

 

Click and Clack and Consumer Reports both said modern oil and engines (the piston kind) only need a 15 sec warm up to get oil flowing again. I let mine idle for about 30 sec but baby it below the S2 sliding redlines at 5000 and 7000 until it is fully warmed up. I still give it a few minutes after that simply because it takes a while for the irons and oil temps to come up to temp and expansion equilibrium.

 

No need to sit and wait for warmup. Everything will warm up to operating temp faster by driving it. As Jedi54 says, just keep it under 4k rpm with easy acceleration until it comes up to full operating temp, above 150 F. Most OBD2 readers (if set for RX8) will signal your app that it has reached operating temp when it reaches between 150-160 degrees F.

i live in fla. if it were below zero i would start car wait 1 min drive car.

once again the car will limit what you do till it is ready.

I'm with the other guys here. I let my car idle for a minute or so and then drive easy until I'm at normal operating temperature. The only time I will let my 8's idle to normal operating temperature is when I'm moving them around with no intention of leaving. I don't shut the engine down cold.

 

My 8 is in the garage so I start the car and reverse out. No idling. Wastes gas and kills environment.

I guess if your car is parked outside in the cold, then warming up a might be alright.

 

30 seconds at most, but I'd rather do easy driving if possible. Just depends on the weather for me.
