Smile Engine Rebuild Decision

I'm finally having to have my 04 original engine with 150K+ miles rebuilt. What has been anyone's experience with street porting?

Search around by thread title, there is a lot of threads about street porting here. But from what I have read it's largely a useless endeavor if you are not going full tilt with a custom tune and full bolt ons. I also doubt a 150,000 engine will be rebuild able so plan on buying a few large hard parts such as new housings and irons.

yup, if done correctly there is a benefit to porting.

Depending on how he uses the car, 8-10 might not qualify as useful, heh.

When I rebuilt mine the ports were part way blocked off with carbon, so I kind of felt like I was porting it just by cleaning that all out, lol.

true ZiG but given how hard it is to pull additional power out of our little torqueless wonder for a car, 8-10 hp is a solid increase for anyone not FI.

I have a 06' basic model Rx8, 149.095 miles on it and it needs an engine rebuild. I've kept exceptional care of it and it has a brand new catalytic converter inside. What could I sell it for if I don't want to spend the money to put an engine in it? Would people buy it for parts or do you think there are buyers out their who would purchase it and do the engine installment themselves?

I was offered $2K for the 04 I have but decided to have the engine rebuilt instead.

@Dreamweaver - how many miles did you have on your 04? I have a quote of $4,500 for a new engine rebuild. What did it cost you to rebuild?

In a few weeks, I will be selling my 2004 RX8 (Grand Touring Package ). I placed a new rebuilt engine in 2013 and had this done by a Mazda dealership. As of today, only 8,000 miles have been placed on the car. The reason for the low mileage is because I bought a new car in 2013 and only drove the RX8 on weekends. The engine runs great but it need body works. If interested, please send me a msg.
