driving an rx8 w no cats

is freaking horrible!!!

ugh , the smell is unbearable. great if youre driving on the track. the car rips and has good power but the smell. i cant....

so, the previous owner says to me oh i gave you the old cat , you can switch it out if u dont like having no cats. i was like cool...

so

today i was under the car , i was gonna try and switch it out . im looking at everyting like damnm this is gonna be tight ( im laying on the ground and theres snow and ice everywhere and im cold ) . so i look at the front flange and im not looking forward to grappling with that i look towards the back of the car to see where theres another flange and ....there isnt one. im like wtf!?! not cool. this exhaust system is one piece from the collectors all the way back to the mufflers. i do remember him saying this was a greddy exhaust . i didnt think that it was a one piece jammy. what a pain in the ***! now im gonna have to chop this system up to fit a cat in there somewhere before i get exhaust poisoning. im gonna try to get a custom muffler shop throw in a good flowing cat . any suggestions on this project?

btw if anyone in new york wants to trade my greddy for a normal cat back system im game.

oem cat is the best, bhr and theres another one that kinda holds up but cant think of which one. rotarys have very hot exhausts and kill most aftermarket cats. i gotta disagree with the smell tho, i grew up on 2 strokes and love it. uncorked rotary is best rotary.

got any pics of your set up?

BHR one isn't recommended for track use per their website. Not sure how it will hold up under hard driving.

The other one you are thinking of is the HJS cat. It flows very well, almost like a catless setup, but cost a shiny penny to have it shipped from Germany.

Gas fume and exhaust are addictive, BTW. It's not a good thing if you like it. Pretty bad for your health.

I have to agree about the stench. I ran with no cat for about a year and half and couldn't take it anymore. It permeates your clothes and hair. I'd drive the car to work, and if the wind happened to blow my exhaust back on me at a stop light, I'd have to sit in my own stink all day. It was bad enough that people would ask me about it. If the wind was blowing the wrong way, it would get into the house through the garage and sink into the furniture. No one wanted to ride in the car with me. I finally had an HJS cat welded in.

I never noticed the smell when I ran catless for a while. Still don't notice it now with my TurboXS cat'd midpipe.

Maybe it's because I work in the petrochemical industry and my threshold for sulfurous odors is pretty high.

Run E85 and Klotz Techniplate and your exhaust will smell like candy.

and? Did the CAT help eliminate the smell or what? I feel like a Rotary will still stink regardless. It’s just the nature of the beast.

Mine is decatted and although the stinch does get annoying at times, I deal with it, because POWAAAAAR

Yes. The cat solved the stench problem.

Eh. There is very little power to be gained by removing the cat, maybe 2%. The restrictions in this car are in the exhaust ports themselves. My lap times stayed exactly the same after adding a cat to my system.

.

Me too. No stench other than some when the cat is cold. As soon as the cat is hot, there is no gas smell.

There are dyno tests online showing how very good high flow cats don't affect horsepower. I think HJS qualify as a very good high flow cat.
