Cracked Passenger Airbag Cover 1st Gen

To replace or not replace. I have read that this not uncommon. I understand why it occurs. Does anyone have experience replacing it?

I've done 2 now. Sand it down and cover with a carbon fiber wrap. It could potentially obstruct the airbag so good idea to cut light slits in the H pattern. To get a replacement from Mazda its $300 plus cost of new airbag.

I remember years ago a TV commercial that had iron-on repair kits to blend in the textures.
I'd be leery of using a full size iron on a dash panel with an airbag, but this kit has a 'mini heating tool'.
Might be worth it.

Just let us know if blows up the airbag.

I got the dash crack after getting the airbag recall done (thanks Mazda).

While it was still a hairline problem, I attempted repaired using Plastex, which is a powdered plastic with an activator solution. I got everything to seal but the seam being still visible, I tried to even the surface with coats of primer and dash texture.

The textured finish never looked even (bad spray technique), so I sanded off the texture, and applied dashboard flocking.

The end result obviously doesn't look stock but is acceptable.

I just replaced it with a new cover. Expensive but I prefer the original look. Takes about 20 mins to pull and replace and swap the airbag assembly over to the new cover.

Thank you

This is my first time asking for advice on here. Thank you for all of your replies.

Did you watch a video, use a manual, or just dive into the repair?

The first time I watched a video and realized how simple it was that I was embarrassed I didn't try removing it before watching a video haha

Thanks

I’m going to order it. I’ll post an update. To be continued...
Hopefully the airbag doesn’t deploy.

Hey there buddy, how did you get the cover, I've located a few but it seems they can't ship them into California, did you have any issues getting yours shipped?
