Changed spark plugs and wires
1 Attachment(s)
I'm a New owner of an 05 rx8 so went to do a bit of maintanece on the car since it was in pretty rough shape when I got it.
The other day I changed my plugs and wires and when I went to put the wires back on the coils one of the tops of the coil had separated. I'm still getting random misfire codes and smoke out of the exhaust sometimes. Also plugs were pretty bad see attached pic Would I need to replace the coil pack as well? Or replace all of em? |
Replace all of them. OEM style coils last about 20K miles on this car. They are considered consumable items. If you have a cat, you need to check it for signs of clogging. Misfires kill cats, and dead cats kill engines.
If you have not read the New and Potential Owners thread, do yourself a favor and read it in its entirety. |
Alright will do. Thanks

The 2 spark plugs that are in rougher shape, they must not have been firing at all. The leading is missing its electrode.
Definitely replace all the coils or your new spark plugs will look like that in no time. Since you're a new owner and there are clear lapses in maintenance by the previous owner, have the compression checked at Mazda to know the state of the engine. |

Thanks Yeah its not a daily driver so I've had it parked since I put the new plugs in last week. And the electrode was actually still there it just had Soo much junk up in it that you can't see it. Also could I just do the compression test myself? Or is there something special about how it needs to be done. The mazda dealership here is a joke and I won't be going there. |
You need a rotary-specific compression test. More information is here:

Ah okay anyone heard of avg. Time or price of a compression test at the dealership.
|
It should book at 1 hour of labor but a dealership near me wanted 1.5.
