CEL - Fix or Sell. Columbus OH, Red RX8
Hello Everyone,
This is a wonderful forum with lots of useful information and has been helpful to diagnose and fix small issues.
I live in Columbus, OH and I bought my car used in Feb 2013 for 8,700$. It has been a great car and a lot of fun.
I got a flashing CEL last week and got it towed to byers mazda. They say the engine has lost compression and needs to be fixed (9,000$+ approx). They say no temporary fix is possible.
I got a compression test done a couple of months back and these are the numbers.
Rotor1: 6.2, 6.2, 6.4 at 250 rpm
Rotor2: 7.1, 6.9, 6.7 at 250 rpm
I cannot spend over 1000-1500$ on the car at this point and I am looking for guidance.
I am also open to offers on the car - 75,000 miles. Stock 2005 RX8 Sport with 6MT. Accident free. 3,000$ I think is a reasonable price for it.
Thanks in advance !!

You need to know what the actual CEL codes that are being thrown are. Those numbers aren't great, but Don't just take their word for it, honestly. Before you fully diagnose your symptoms, you can't really make the best decision.
If you consider how much you're losing on the car by selling it @ 3k, is spending another 3k to have a new engine really any worse?

The code is an engine misfire code, I just talked to the dealer again.
It is low on compression but I believe bad ignition coils is the issue right now.
I was cruising on the highway at 65mph when the CEL started flashing and I was losing power, Could feel harsh vibrations suggesting misfire as well. Pulled to the side and the engine idled really rough (misfire symptoms again) and stalled. Got towed to mazda after that.
Any other technical inputs ?
On the finance side:
The RX8 is my only car and I need to pay 100$+ to get it towed to a different shop. Anyone in columbus that could help ?
Looking to put the money towards a down payment on a lease.

You have a dying engine my friend. New ignition components and adding in an upgraded starter (if you have not already done so) are the only things I know of that MAY, I stress the may part, give you some more time with your current engine. But if you don't think you will have money put away for a new engine soon, kind of sounds like your I would sell it and put it towards the lease. You will be rolling the dice until you sell it or get the engine rebuilt.
