Car dies at idle and I am stumped

Alright so quick overview of the car. 05 AT 98xxx miles. <5000m on engine. <10000 on coils. New plugs and wires. New maf. New crank posistion sensor. New optima red top battery. New vacuum lines.

Three codes P0037, P0138 which are both for the rear o2 sensor. Emissions codes ill get to later. Then i have P0661 for a faulty Intake Manifold Valve.

As far as symptoms. The car wont hold idle until warmed up. I have to feather the gas for about a minute before it can sustain itself. Then it may shut off when braking. Or shifting from drive to park or reverse or it may die after redlining. Its even died from pumping the brakes. However all of these are inconsistent causes. I really never know. Power seems okay it does hesitate from a stop but things picks right up and through the full power band. I also smell gas from the exhaust but that could be from the o2 sensor being bad perhaps.

Does anyone have any idea what i can do? I dont think fuel pump since i can keep it going as long as im giving it gas. And i dont think cat because the car doesnt overheat, the cat doesn't glow, and i dont have any high end power loss or capping. But im not sure of anything to be honest.

I appreciate any and all help.

Hate to say it but get your compression tested, gas smell from the exhaust indicates a tired Catalytic converter or unburnt fuel from your possible compression issue....

Where did you 5k engine come from? If it's a Mazda remanufactured then yeah you definitely need your wind checked...

From: 2017 Miata RF Launch Edition
Step 1: purchase $15 OBD Bluetooth adapter and phone app
Step 2: log MAF rate, LTFT, AFR/Lambda, coolant temp, IAT
Step 3: post log here
Step 4: get a rotary-specific compression test
Step 5: post results here

P0661 is the SSV, if it's stuck open you'll have all kinds of idling problems. I'd start there. It may just need cleaning and a new solenoid.

The car is telling you exactly what's wrong, you can't tell me you're stuck

P0661 is a solenoid signal low which means that the solenoid isn't sending vacuum to the actuator and the SSV will be stuck closed.

DTC P0661

What kind of MAF sensor did you put in the car? I had issues with my autozone one and idling. I swapped it for a new Denso MAF sensor and it idles perfect now.
