Can someone tell me what this part is called?

its the middle bar that runs underneath the car .

When it was straight, it was a cross member, now it is kind of a pretzel member. If it is touching the PPF, you might be hearing a bang when you go over bumps that you cannot identify.

Yeah , I had a nasty encounter with one of those gas station refueling ports that stick out of the ground. Unfortunately this is the second time. Yeah I hear a really strange noise at about 5000 rpm .

Okay last silly question , what is the function of the cross member? Can I simply remove the damaged one until the replacement arrives?.

keeping the unibody straight.... I would not run without it for any significant period of time... otherwise when you go to remount it the holes may no longer line up....

There's also a second one a bit further back.

Hmm, I'm going to have to try refitting mine, been running without it since mid last summer because the midpipe would not fit with it. Not sure if it was this one or the other one, but one of the two. Oops.
