Brand New Owner: Thoughts?

Hello, I am a brand new RX8 owner and a brand new member to this forum. This is my very first car as I am now currently 18. I have a 2004 6 speed manual, I just wanted to see if anyone has tips or things I should know being that I just got this car.

Thanks

Yes, the new owners thread that is stickied in this sub forum. Then post up with any questions after searching. But, anything you can think of asking has already been discussed.

Yeah, I knew about the oil and the gas. To be honest gas prices where I live aren't too bad. I don't live in the city, I'm around 40 minutes from Houston, Tx. I just wanted a vehicle that I would enjoy driving, maybe work on it as well to get experience.

Oh trust us, there will be plenty of that with this car especially if you don't read up and get informed now before problems really start to show their ugly heads.

This forum has an almost immeasurable amount of valuable information, the best thing you can do right now is read up and be preventative with your maintenance.

Yeah, I have gotten a bit of info off of this whole site before and after buying it. I decided to just create an account since I've been using it. So I guess now I have to read more into problems to prevent as much damage I can. Thanks.

Welcome to the addiction.
I would suggest the first thing you do is to check your catalytic converter if you have one.
If you don't know how to check your coils yet, you may want to change all 4 along with your plugs and wires.
Other things to read up on, ESS & MAF sensor cleaning.
Those are basic maintenance items that can cause a lot of common problems.

If you see a LY GT with Missouri plates in a few weeks, wave.
Have fun!

Welcome !

RX8 Club’s recommended maintenance schedule, more comprehensive and proactive than Mazda’s schedule.
30,000 miles:
- Replace Ignition coils
- Replace Plug wires
- Replace Spark plugs
- Clean MAF (mass air flow sensor)
- Clean ESS (e-shaft sensor)
- Reset ESS profile
- Clean power steering connections
- Clean battery terminals and clamps
- Replace transmission fluid
- Replace coolant (Mazda FL-22 is highly recommended)
- Replace air filter
- Replace brake fluid (fluid in the brake lines AND the clutch line)
~$300 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

every 60,000:
...all 30,000, plus...
- Clean all chassis electrical grounding points
- Replace accessory belts
- Clean OMP lines
- Replace rear differential fluid
- Replace thermostat
- Clean / Straighten AC condenser fins
- Clean / Straighten oil cooler fins
- Inspect catalytic converter
- Clean / Inspect intake valving
- Consider / inspect all points in 90,000+ as well, many items fail early
~$130 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

90,000:
...all 30,000, plus any 60,000 not yet done, plus...
- Replace coolant bottle
- Replace radiator hoses
- Replace radiator
- Replace front O2 sensor
- Replace motor mounts
- Inspect clutch pedal assembly for flex / weld breaks
~$900 USD in parts if you shop smartly.
At 100k, anything original in the cooling system is really suspect and failure prone. It represents the biggest threat to your engine.
