Bout to jump into a new RX8

Well. I've made the choice and I'm about to purchase a 2004 RX8 GT. After test-driving multiple models, and seeing the power differences between two similar model cars I think it's time that I make the final decision and move towards an RX GT that a guy selling for 3200 bucks. The engine seems to be fairly strong the guy seems to have known how to maintain it he's selling it for a low price due to a second gear downshift grind. The other ones I looked at had multiple check engine lights had 3rd gear in and out grinds and the guy wanted more for the vehicle as well as it didn't have as much power as the prior. I have not owned an RX8 before and have read a bit posted on this site about these RX8 engines and how to properly maintain them Focus being on engine cooling systems and coil and oiling. If anyone has any key pointers for me, not to be hassled because I'm a newcomer, I would love to hear them. This 2004 engine wise seems to be in better running condition then the ladder of the two so I'm happy to make this purchase. If I'm to purchase this vehicle in my area there are no emission laws would it make sense for me to remove the cat and go to a race pipe to stop the potential for having my cat clogged and causing more mechanical problems down the road? Also, would it be in my best interest right away to change the coil and ignition system before driving it regularly? Also, do you think that second gear grind when downshifting is a Synchro issue or does anyone have any other suggestions, I was considering buying a used replacement transmission and throwing that in to remedy that problem. Unless anyone else has an idea of a quick fix. A rebuild seems rather pricey although purchasing a replacement transmission I might be purchasing someone else's problems. If anyone has any ideas I'd be glad to hear everyone's input. All you oeople on this forum that give new guys a hard time take it easy on me.

Referring to guys as A-holes in your first post isn't a good idea.

Most important thing before buying is a rotary specific compression test.
They can run really strong with failing compression.
Read the New Owner stickies.

What about the second gear grind on the downshift.

Do you happen to have any thoughts about the grin when downshifting to second. Would that be a Synchro issue and has anyone experienced this problem before. I read about the weld on the clutch pedal but all other gears don't grind so I think that is not the issue. Ideas?

Here is the most important advice you will ever get regarding RX-8 ownership:

Treat an RX-8 without a compression test the same as an RX-8 without an engine.

Seriously. Don't buy it unless you get the compression test done. Your $3200 purchase could turn into a $7000 purchase.

Synchro issues manifest themselves as grinding gears. They usually start at higher RPMs and then progress downward as the problem gets worse. Properly rev-matching on down-shifts should eliminate them (that does the work for the synchro) so you mostly see it on upshifts. If you're grinding on rev-matched downshifts you may be looking at other issues like clutch hydraulics or less common internal transmission damage. The only fix for bad synchros is to rebuild or replace the transmission.

Read these and quit asking to be spoon fed while also insulting us at the same time.

Thanks I think...

Well about the first comment. I already booked the compression test at our local dealer, although being Canada and and even worse mazda service being run out of a second rate dealership, I have to wait about a week to get it done. That being the case that is why I am trying to get as much info as I can before approaching the second issue which is the gear grind. The second part of what you said I did read two of the three that you posted thread although didn't see the one about causes and symptoms which I do appreciate you making me aware of. I searched like it instructed me, on the site using the Google reference point rx8 club and still didn't find the reference to grin specifically on the downshift only. I will read the thing about the 100$ upgrades piece right after supper. I don't expect to be spoon fed my friend. Sorry about what you think was an insult. Was actually a joke in the initially post. Just forgot the smiley emoji. ** there is is. Hope you didn't take it personal. Thank you for the tip as I said before. Truth be told wether I buy the one for 3200 or the other for 4000 one of them I am getting provided they pass the compression test and have reasonably high compression. So not to worry I'm listening. Just wanted some help as I didn't see anything specific to my query.
