I have had my Rx8 Shinka (Auto Transmission) since November and I have to say, this site has provided me with tons of valuable information. You all have been a huge life saver for me. That being said, I'm still learning. I have trust issues with my dealers mechanic. (This is what happens when they fry the computer before you can drive it off the lot.) They replaced it for me, so that is not my issue.

My issue at hand is my transmission. I had the fluid checked only to discover that it was overfilled. It must have been this way since I got it because the only person besides myself to touch my engine was to do my plugs/coils/wires and my oil, and I was right next to him the whole time. My transmission fluid was never touched up until the time I had it checked. At this point, it was let out and found to be 1 quart overfull. This was done two days ago.

Today, my Check Engine light came on, so I had the guy at O'Reilly's pull the code and what I got was:
- P0761: Shift Solenoid C Performance or Stuck Off.

Other symptoms include:
- When I use manual mode, there is extreme lagging in 1st gear, to the point that I have to skip it and start in 2nd.
- When I use auto mode, it won't shift till the car is going 40 MPH, when normally it would go from 1-->2 almost right away in auto.
- In later gears, in both auto and manual, it jerks. The longer I drive it, the harder the jerk.
- Sometimes when I stop and try to skip first (See lagging issue) it won't let me unless I coast forward a bit first.

My question is this: What is the name of the part I may need for this? The guy at O'Reilly's quoted me for a "Clutch Kit." Am I missing something here? My car is automatic. I'm looking all over google and I'm coming up empty.

Update: So I am guessing it's called the transmission shift solenoid. This is especially confusing since I cannot find this damn part anywhere. Grrr...

 

That sure seems to be the case. You should call your local mazda dealer and ask the parts department. They should be able to tell you if you can at least purchase the solenoid, possibly even which is the problem. Else you can start digging through online catalogs, but I couldn't tell you which part actually need replaced. I don't know the internals of an auto trans. Sorry :/
