Honestly, the best thing I ever did was take an adult night class at the local high school on car repair/maintenance (and another one on small engine repair/maintenance). We brought our cars in and worked on them with a mechanic helping us out and making sure nobody died or broke things worse.

Once you get comfortable, the entire DIY sub-forum becomes a treasure trove of reasons to hide from your wife in the garage... I mean of neat things to do to your car.
