Advice 192 or 231
Hi I'm interested in buying a rx8 just wondering which engine size is better to go for. For some reason it seems it's cheaper to insure the 231. But was wondering if the 231 costs a lot more to run and maintain. Also does the 231 produce more problems than the 192 engine. Also as these engines do have the risk of going which engine is more likely to go or is the risk the same? Just want to know which engine would be the better to go for with the cost I'm not too fussed about getting the bigger one to go quicker I'm bothered about which will overall be cheaper to run and insure etc.
Thanks Liam

The 192 is a 4-port engine, the 231 is the 6-port.
If there is any reliability difference, the 192 is the one that might be more of a problem due to the lower redline and less high VE to clear carbon, but we would be splitting hairs, it's really not any significant difference in reliability.
No difference in running costs unless you exercise peak power all the time, in which case power takes petrol, and using 231bhp will use more petrol than using 192. All other costs are the same.
Go for the 231, it's well worth the extra power.
Note: Get a compression test first either way. It doesn't matter which engine design it is, if someone sold it because it is about to fail, all the reliability guesses go out the window and it doesn't matter which one is more likely to have a problem, as you will be stuck with someone else's pre-existing problem.

Read, read, read my friend. RIWWP has some links in his signature, read them. IMO if you are worried about operating costs, you may want to look for a different car to drive especially If this will be your daily driver. The only thing cheap about this car is obtaining it in the first place as its value has depreciated like a rock.
