I picked up my RX8 on Thursday. I had bought it off of eBay knowing that it needed a transmission and would likely need an engine. I was trying to decide between overhauling or doing the LS swap. The engine turns out to be in pretty good shape so that will shape my direction. Runs strong, idles great, and starts quickly hot or cold. I will be getting the compression checked soon but it looks like I might be able to keep it stock and enjoy it as a rotary for the time being which means I need the transmission fixed.

Looking for some input. The second gear synchro is shot but the rest of the gears are smooth. The seller said that he thought there might be a problem with bearings although I don't hear anything (but have poor hearing). Should I have the trans rebuilt? I can purchase one from a local junkyard for $175 but then it might not be any better. I have read that the S2 had a stronger transmission. I can pick up a low mileage 2009 transmission for $700. Would that be a better idea? Does the S2 transmission have better synchros in them?

IMO, the S2 gearbox is a definite step up from the S1. I put one in my 2005 and have been very happy with it.

The S2 gearbox uses a different shifter and neutral/reverse switch connectors. You can cut the neutral/reverse connectors off your old S1 gearbox and splice them onto the S2, no problem. You'll probably want the block off plate as well.
