and although the 3 rotors can be fun they're not exactly something new or rare but they are pricey. mazda put these engines in a sedan over 20 years ago, a little funny to see people just finding out about them now.

correct. depending on the state it will say 4 or 6 cylinders. the purpose is so the car is placed in the proper insurance brackets.

Does your state (Connecticut, I believe) set insurance rates, rather than the insurance companies having their own way?

Where I live (Virginia) registration fees go by axle and weight, which is shown on the reigstration. Cylinders are not listed. The counties charge a personal property tax, based on value, but they ask for number of cylinders when you register. The sytem took 0 for mine.

Back to the real topic...the 3 rotor engine. Really neat video. Just another "disassemble a Wankel" show, until that third rotor appears. Kind of like one of those Russian nesting dolls.

CT doesn't but MA if I remember correctly does (that's where I am originally from)

edit: i could be confusing with registration fees.

Insurance rates are a free-for-all in Connecticut. You can call 3 different providers and get rates varied with a much as $1000 for annual premium. About 2 years ago I switched from Progressive to Nationwide and saved almost $100 a month for no particular reason at all. The coverages remained the same for both of my inured cars.

the number of cylinders on paperwork is irrelevant. the people who code the DMV websites never accounted for anything besides a piston engine, because they are almost unknown and make up less than .1% of the population of cars on the road.

after the problem was known, the answer was to just punch in a random number from 0 to 6 cylinders.

some insurance companies might try to take advantage of that and hike up rates, others might give you the benefit and underrate the power output. being non FI the difference would probably be minimal in either case.

I pay by original retail value. Paying in the 30k bracket on a 3k car sucks...
