2010 Grey R3 is now home...

Hi Folks,
I have had a "problem" with motorised vehicles since I was 16 and had my first m'bike, now getting close to 68 I had been fighting a desire to own another rear driver with a clutch pedal.. all ready had a full garage (2007 XK vert across the back for the winter, an older Audi A8 being used by a "returned" daughter, a 2007 Sienna awd and an 84 Suzuki 1150EF (that may be going now) The wife still has a little part time job and the daughter also works, so I was often without wheels, although rarely with a reason to go anywhere, but it did help me to rationalise the "need" for yet another car in the pool.
The last sporty car had been an 08 VW R32, fast enough for me, great in the snow, but heavy in the front so ended with understeer, not the best to track and uninvolving to drive...
The last manual was a fairly heavily modified 85 BMW 535, still like Bimmers, but needed to try something different.. Mazda RXs had always fascinated me, especially the 93-95s, v pretty cars. Sat in a BRZ, probably a more "logical" choice, but??
Not really a lot of choice is there...
Picked up the R3 yesterday, private sale, no compression test, but seems okay so far. 13C in Ontario and raining, how would those wide Michelin Pilots be in the wet? Pretty good, didn't take long to get a smile on my face, even went looking for the DSC? switch, but luckily could not find it, guess they don't want it turned off by mistake??
It is now all clean in the garage, those big winters will be going on next week, just in case I "need" to go for a drive....
Only concern is that it as a "Turbo-X cat back, I knew it would be a bit noisy but it is not comfortable at 99k/60mph in 6th, made me want to leave it in 5th, will have to look into options (PO did not keep the original)
Please forgive the long ramble, bound to be questions for the experts soon, but must go and polish it now...
Maybe someone could point me to a link for a service manual?
Regards
Trevor T

Welcome Trevor.

I highly recommend reading the new and potential owners sticky found at the top of the new members forum. it's mainly geared towards the series 1 rx8's, bit the same principles apply.

The tires you have are good in wet, but I'd be worried about those temps. Better to keep winters on than get stuck with summers in a snowdump! You won't get very far...
And the DSC can be found to the left of the steering column.
As for the exhaust, you could always try posting a trade/ sale on a local classifieds site (kijiji for example).

Post up some pics!

Thank you, 13C mid December here was a blessing to get it home.
It won't go anywhere when it is cold without good Winters, and then not very often. Picking up a set of S1 18in rims with 235/45 Michelin X-ice 3s on Saturday that should do the job... No pictures yet, but apart from the blue tips on the turbo-x it is stock and very clean.
Will live with the noise for now and likely get used to it, roads around us are all 50mph/80kph limit but 60/99 keeps you 90% safe and that is the worst spot in 6th, 55/90 seemed much better or 5th if some throttle needed..
I will be running some premix, PO didn't, but I can see mainly positive benefits to extending life and helping with combustion chamber sealing, planning on using roughly 200:1..
No mods planned, it will just be a fun thing for an old man to practise some old skills and hopefully enjoy a couple of track days next summer, I have a feeling that we will be able to embarrass some of the high horsepower cars on a tighter track, we shall see...
Regards

Hey welcome to the club, and for sure post pics when you can.
For me I also found the turbo x exhaust a little loud so I went with racing beat exhaust which is priced nice and simple to install by yourself if your handy with a wrench and don't mind crawling under the car.

Hi G man,
appreciate your comment re Racing Beats cat back; will live with this for now though, thought I read some where about an add on to quieten the Turbo-X, might contact them sometime...
Spent a few hours on my back under the A8 in the fall to replace the centre diff output flange seal, off with the exhaust, one of the cats and the driveshaft to replace a $10 seal, but saved mega bucks in labour.. original 1999 exhaust came off & on again in one piece, so yes, I can use a wrench/spanner..
Think our nice weather is coming to an end?
