in order to program another keyless entry unit and another key, you must have 2 working keys to begin with. or go to mazda, so im in the "go to mazda" boat

my question is what makes only mazda capable of adding another key?
i understand there is programming involved, but do they have special equipment to program another key, with only 1 active key?

or is it just a hack in order to get me into the stealership?

The keyless entry unit is easy enough to program, it's the key itself that requires programming. Programming consist of making the ECU recognize a magnetic transponder and allows the car to start. The one for the earlier models come separate. the later models started incorporating the key and remote into one unit.

There are hacks to make the keys, but in my world it's just not that serious and I just paid the dealer. As long as you have one key you are fine. It's when your keyless when you get the double shaft with no vaseline. The system was designed to be laborious, time consuming and difficult to discourage people from making them and thwarting the efforts to keep people from stealing cars with the keys. So in a manner of speaking, yes you must go to the dealer. Its about $50 for the key and about an hour labor.

On a slightly different note, wife somehow slammed the accord key in the door while closing it. She destroyed the plastic housing. You had to hold the key together to start the car. Luckily it has a remote unit that can be opened up. So I bought a key from the dealer and told them just sell me the cut key you need not program it. They protested, but in the end gave me the key. I opened the thing up and took out the key fob and transponder, swapped it out to the new key, and she fired right up. At least I saved myself $100.00. Just thought I would share that.

I only have 1 key when i bought the car, i may need to get another one just in case we lost the only key we have on the rx8. I was thinking about getting a 2nd key just in case this thing should happen.
