Subaru cheats when they market an over displaced "rally car"
rally cars cap out at 2.0 liters

stock vs stock... the only way the rx wins is if the STI is pulling a boat trailer.....

RX7 has a rotary...with 2 turbines attached

NOTE: the WRX did have stickers on it, so that adds like 5-10hp on the butt dyno...

My two vehicles are my '8 and a Soobie with the 2.5 liter engine and a VF34 (larger than stock) turbo.

Yes, the Subaru has almost twice the horsepower, and yes, that can be a lot of fun - but when I get back in the '8, there is really no comparison. The steering, the wide power band, slick shifting and interior quality make the Soob feel like a TANK! I corner better, accelerate faster and ride waaay better - both have little power below 3500 revs, at which point my EJ25 engine sounds like it's going to explode but the Renesis is just starting to sing!

Take a serious look at a WRX or STi - without the steroidal motor would ANYONE seriously buy one, of their own free will? The worst kind of plasticky interior inside a butt ugly body, and the laggy (god help me if a Honda Oddysey gets the jump on me!) turbo has to be kept on the boil to get anywhere fast. The bigger the turbo, the more revs it takes to spool it up.

HAHAHA Lafs at this guy..

no ****... of course you got your *** handed to ya...

06 WRX is my other car.. my suby will crush my RX8. Even if my WRX was all stock it my 8 would fail in a drag race.. HOWEVER. a properly driven RX8 on the track will give Subarus a hard day at the office. I have done a **** ton of suspension mods to my WRX and an all stock suspension rx8 still handles much better. IMO. but my wrx is MUCH better.. and yep.. after 05 my06+ is 2.5 now..WRX. But the STI was always 2.5 for the most part.

if you have a VF34 on a 2.5 and it is tuned correctly.. (better than the stock tune) you should spool that thing no problem. I have a 20G on mine. It spools a little slower Full at 3800 rage but it feels good.. When I had my VF39 I got that thing up and going around 3100 - 3300 rpm no problem. a HUGE upgrade just for spooling would be a better down pipe. Bell mouth or divorced and EQUAL LENGTH HEADER.. Seriously... Un-equal length header sounds great cuz you got the boxer rumble. but it is in fact the sound of inefficiency... Whole new car in terms of spooling when I switched them out and got a re-tune.

But EVERYTHING you said about the interior and cheep *** plastic crap is dead on... I probably would never have gotten the suby if it was not a beast and fun from a power standpoint to drive..

My 2012 WRX is better in the snow, hauls the dog better, and gets groceries better. Academically it's faster in a straight line, but so what? They are both plenty fast enough in a straight line to get you in trouble in a hurry.

Nice day? Curvy road? Track? General driving enjoyment? My 8 has my WRX beaten on all points. (Thus why I have both.)

Drove my buddies WRX a few weekends ago, few mods on it and a tune so of course it had its plusses. One thing i did not care for though is how squishy the transmission felt. Shifting that car just did not feel good.

This is pretty much in line with the way I feel about my RX-8 and my Mazdaspeed6. Mazdaspeed6 is a sharp handler from a midsize sedan standpoint (it made Jeremy Clarkson's 25 Greatest Drives list along with the RX-8 and the MX-5), but it feels like a charging rhino after driving the RX-8, which comparatively feels like a gazelle.

This is a tired old statement, but the RX-8 really feels like a suit you put on rather than something you sit in to ride on.

On the ground of 4 seat sporty cars that are fun to drive:

WRX (including STi)
M3
Mustang
Camaro
Focus ST
Mazdaspeed 3
GTI
BRZ/FRS
Civic SI

I'm sure I've forgotten a few in there.

Really I think the "closest" to the RX8 would be the WRX (can still fit humans in the back seats).

The STi is a very unique car in terms of how it drives. There is an initial lean that I wasn't expecting, and then out of no where the car takes a set and just grips and goes! Also, the transmission (drove one with the factory short shifter) is pretty good - decent feel and precise however for some reason going into 1st gear (and only 1st gear) feels squishy. It reminds me of how my old 1997 F150 felt (in every gear). Turbo lag was pretty bad, but that can be solved with a simple downshift. A nice car overall that's for sure, but when my fiance was thinking of purchasing a new STi, she just couldn't get over the cheapness of some of the interior parts.

I'm sorry but I don't think they are unique at all. There are MANY high powered 4wd sedans on the market which have the same characteristics.
