$45.us for 4 coils?/Idea for auto's?
Hey peeps! New RX-8 owner. 2007 Auto, with 100,000kms (aproximatly 60,000mi for my American friends). Has a factory/dealer installed "mazdaspeed" cold air intake. Although I don't have anything to compare it to, I believe I'm having power issues? I've done the plugs & wires (looked like they had never been done!), I know my next step is coils, but from all I've read on here it seems like it's nessisary to spend about 50-60us/each? Should I be staying away from sets of 4 for like 45us + shipping?
So I know because it's an auto I also miss out on like 2000 high end cause the trannies can't handle the heat? Has anyone heard of someone adding a HD-trany cooler and reprogramming to accept the higher rpm as a performance upgrade?..... Does anyone think this sounds like a good/bad idea?.... |

People have toyed with upping the rev limiter on autos, but I don't think that the concern was heat as much as it was centripetal forces exerted on the torque converter. That's an awfully big heavy piece of metal to spin at 9,000 rpm.. Do some searching and you'll find some answers, but proceed with caution. A clutch blowing up is traumatic, a torque converter blowing up would straight ruin your day. |

People have reported issues with no-name brand eBay coils and their ilk.. I'd stay away from them personally.

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the people responding with opinions on no-name coils. I'm sceptical about them myself.? What I'd appreciate even more is actual experiences with these coils? Putting what we all "think" about no-name parts as side, has anyone said "what-the-heck, it's less than the cost of one Name brand or original!" And tried them anyway? Love to hear about any positive or negative experiences with no-name/cheap coils?
It's literally, LITERALLY a sticky in the tech garage section.. I would advise reading these stickies and searching the forum before you aggravate some of the less politically correct forum members.. |

Good OEM coils prior to revision C tend to last 20K miles or less. (We don't have good data on how long C coils last.) How long do you expect knock-off coils to last? Is it a good deal to buy them 4 times to get to 20K? Is it worth it to keep troubleshooting every time something doesn't seem right?
If you can confirm they are Intermotor coils, then they are the same thing as OEM rev A or B coils, and they will work fine for about 20K miles. If you cannot confirm their origin, you must assume they are cheap imitations and that you will have problems with them. Very few people have had good luck with the cheap ones. |
