Sorry to 200.mph, I thought this thread had been closed. But I love rx8s nd I know about the maintanence nd all that, I just wanted to hear from actual owners in my area. Would you recommend/ not recommend getting an rx8 if I live in the pocono area? (HAZLETON area). Im deciding between a s/c for my cobalt or getting this RX 8
2007 Mazda RX-8 Sport, $9,995 - Cars.com

I'm really discouraged by the lack of low end torque, nd the fact that it already has 57k if the owners before me didn't know how to treat it. I plan on gettin some history from my mazda dealer too.

If your looking to get the car because you want something fast (only saying because you mention the s/c) then this isnt the car you want. I personally love the car, and i dont think the area will change your opinion of the car, as long as you get good winter tires if you plan to drive it in the winter, they do not do that great in the snow.

As for the mileage I wouldnt worry about it. I bought my current 2004 rx8 with 83k on the odometer. Just take it for a good test drive to see if everything checks out. And change the plugs, coils, and wires immediately after purchasing, if the dealer hasnt already done it.

Thanks for the input dude. I read a really great thread on here for potential buyers, and found out the cat was replaced in feb. and the only known changes for plugs coils etc was in 09. (Car only has 57k tho) it's a GT but they don't know that apparently. Nd it was serviced for a power loss issued which I'm assuming is due to carbon build up. Is the car permanently ruined in any way from this?

the power lost issue could have been related to the cat needing a replace, or bad coils and spark-plugs, not guaranteeing that there is no permanent engine damage tho (there have been cases of the cat nuking the engine), your best bet would be to test drive it and have a compression check done.
and as for the passing people thing, as long as you are with in the speed limit of say 65 you should have not problem shifting into 3rd and passing other cars.

Kudos on the clever emoticon usage. ND the dealer doesn't wanna let me take it to get a compression test b/c the closest mazda dealer is about 15 miles away from him. But I suppose I could return it if the test results were bad? Idk how that works with a trade-in...

id tell him if you want to get that one that the purchase hinges on a compression test. if they want to sell that car im sure they will do one.

if they wont they may have reasons for not letting you, aka issues.

You should never purchase an Rx8 without a compression test tbh.. I'm near Reading with Prism11 and he hit the nail on the head.. Not the fastest cars in a straight line but they excel in so many different areas.. The feeling you get driving these cars is awesome.. Just make sure a rotary engine is the right match for you, and definitely get winter tires if driving around here in any amount of snow

With this time of year is hard to get a solid meet because a lot of people put their cars away for the winter. I drive mine all year so I'm up for a meet anytime.

Cruzzer, the low torque is really only noticeable in the lower end of the rpm range. Up above the 4k mark the car has plenty of power for accelerating even at highway speeds. Also, I actually bought my current 8 without the compression test. I just took it for a real hard test drive on the hottest day that month and after it got up to temperature shut the car off and then just restarted it after a few minutes. If it hot starts without a problem is probably pretty good on compression. I did this with a future engine rebuild and turbo in mind though.

It could Be sooner (before the snow) or after, no worries ... I'd just really like to meet some ppl that are just as crazy about there car.... Drive in the winter aye? Do you have coilovers, is your car lowered? I drove my 8 last winter with a lot of success and a great winter tire (Yokohama ice guard).. I'm waiting in a set of coils And wad curious if they help or hinder winter driving.. thanx

Im still on stock suspension right now. I plan on hotchkis sways and Ksport coilovers in the spring though. Takes a while to save up when your a full time student.. thats also building a supra. Thats the only reason the 8 has DD duty right now. Once the other car is done the 8 will go under the wrench as well.

Thanks for all the I input guys. This forums way more responsive than others I gotta say haha. I'm a full time student like Prism so I decided my wallet would be safest if I went with the s/c instead of the 8. BUT if anything in this deal/build goes south ill part the kit out and if be in the market for an 8 this time. Another factor was the 8 is in Long Island, and the test drive was supposed to be right after Sandy came. I got a whole s/c kit for 500$ too. Might seem kinda dumb but I'd really wanna come to one of ur meets just to see how an 8 should run nd have something to compare my test drives too. And did any of u guys on this thread go to an AutoX race at LCC Nantikoke this past summer nd know Paul Fink??
