PA Job Search
I'm looking for a new job in the Philly area. I've been checking the regular job boards, but I figured I'd throw it out here in case anyone knows of any place looking for an experienced Systems/Network Admin or Engineer.
Also, my wife is looking for a new job in the mortgage industry. She's an underwriter, but can also process. If you know of anyone hiring, pass it on.
PM me if you have any info. Thanks!
I don't want this thread to just be about me, though. If you're looking for a job, post something here. Maybe someone can help.

Interesting - any of you care to comment on geography here?
My wife teaches English at the college level and our daughters are highly committed to dance. Doing simple tricks like putting all of the colleges and universities on a MapQuest map shows a target-rich environment. I can imagine a scenario where my wife teaches and the oldest two are studying dance the same school.
However, all such schools look to be in the middle of the downtown, metro Philly area where I believe the following two things are true - 1) no electrical engineer (circuit board) designer positions nearby - thus must drive about an hour through downtown traffic to get to/from work and 2) housing/condo prices are outrageous.
Is that what you all are finding about the inner city too? I keep seeing references to jobs outside the city or even outside the state. Aren't there technology jobs inside the city itself?

Cool Blue,
Many tech jobs are outside the city with the Pharma companies mostly being to the west, tech companies in the 202 corridor. The Lockheeds are King of Prussia PA, Newtown PA (Bucks county) and Moorestown NJ. A lot of tech jobs are found around Malvern area as well, with companies like Vanguard (financial), Siemens etc. Within Philly the biggest employers are banking, real estate and law firms. The key is to find a work area and to have your home in the "reverse commute" situation. For example I worked in Bucks county for a while and lived in Delaware county off of 476. Going North on 476, east on the turnpike in the morning has much less traffic than the opposite direction toward KoP. If you work in the city living south or in Jersey because the commute is generally easier. Also, when I worked in the city while living in Jersey my overall tax was less (city wage tax charged against Jersey compared to paying both the city and PA taxes).
But bottom line, I choose where I live and I choose where I work so I don't complain about commuting, if I did then it would be time to change one or the other.
for the techies, another possibility is hooking up with a temp firm, Judge comes to mind. My neighbor ended up with a full time position at Vanguard after working three one year contracts with them. It is often the way in with Vanguard and with some of the places like Merck.

CBD,
Depending on where you'd like to be, there are number of companies in the area. As Silver Streak said, there are many opportunities in the areas outside the city (King of Prussia, Collegeville, West Point, etc.). There are a number of companies in the Blue Bell area as well (I believe Siemens). There are several Pharma companies, as mentioned. GSK and Wyeth in Collegeville and Merck in West Point. Each of these sites has a relatively large number of employees (Merck has ~10K while Wyeth/GSK have about ~1K) and I am sure there are numerous opportunities. For your wife, I believe Bucks County was the highest average salary in the US for teachers last year (I could be wrong here). As far as housing costs, some of these areas are quite developed and can be pricey. There are outlying areas which are still reasonable and are still within commuting distance to most of the industrial areas. Quakertown, Pennsburg, and Limerick come to mind. Traffic commute can also be reasonable in these areas (when compared to center city).
Hope this helps.

Most lockheed facs (and i believe most tech facs) want space; office space, warehouse space, network space, parking space, big diesel engines incase of a huge power failure, etc. Inner city is nice but its more glamour than quality per square foot. KOP is a perfect example of this, plenty of land for growth plus easy access to the pa turnpike as well as philly. Plus i think it looks better when government officials are invited.
