Any suggestions on how to deal with the potholes and the rotten pavement of NYC. My car is taking a beating and so am I. I feel like I'm going to brake something.

Avoid them like a madman...j/k. There's nothing you can do other than, memorize the road (if you go thru it everyday, altho new potholes appear), or as soon as you see the pavement messed up and rumbling slow down and try to go over them (if you can't avoid all). I hit one the other day going around 40 mph, was a hard one but nothing happened to it.

I try my best to avoid them, if all else fails.....the hell with it, i got insurance on the tires/wheels. I get new ones for free, if anything happens :p

Speaking of New York guys, I may be moving there and I might take a big loss on my 8 if I sell it. I plan on living in Manhattan so won't really need a car. Is there an inexpensive garage, maybe outside the city, where I can keep my car?

there is no such thing as an inexpensive garage around manhattan.....but about a 20 minute bus ride into jersey by me i know the garage i pay for is 75 a month....in manhattan you will be looking at 4X that easily

Yeah, it could definitely be outside of the city, I'd probably only use it occasionally to drive up or down the coast or something, so Jersey would be fine.

A monthly garage in manhattan city is approx $400-$500, now THATS a big hit on the paycheck Damn, chrism....$75/month, I wish we had those prices here *sigh*, I would drive my car everyday to work, but then with these "cheap" gas prices I doubt it. Rather spend my $4.00 subway ride to and from work.

Yeah, there's no way I could afford to park the car in Manhattan. If I wanted to take a weekend trip, I guess I could take a train out to the garage and take the car out.

i think you misunderstood me...i pay 75 in jersey....and its 20 minutes to get to the city by bus....and we got cheaper gas too...i fill up on super for 199-209 a gallon

Called my insurance company, and insuring the car, even with minimal coverage is a lot more in New Jersey than LA. Man, what goes on in Jersey.

How about NY suburbs, would that be a better bet?

ok if u are registering a car in NY you want to be located in Long Island, preferaly North Shroe.
Manhattan is CRAZY for insurance and queens is slightly higher then Long Island. I am moving to queens but lucky for me my parents live in Long ISland which is where the car will be registered. You can look on Craigslists for Spots in Long ISland City and Astoria.

I think there is the a building in Long Island City called CityLights which allows you to rent a spot in the building even if you dont live there and a spot is like 150.

When are you planing on moving out here, I am looking for place in Astoria and I have looked at couple places with 2 car garages, which i def wont need we might be able to work a deal based on timing.

Hey Shocka, really appreacite it the info.

Hopefullly tomorrow, I'll get my employment package and then I'm going to start looking hard for an apartment in the city. Mid-May is when they'd like me to start work by. My office will be on 5th in the high 30's, and I'll be working long hours so I'm going to try and find a place that at least has a single bus or subway (don't want to have to transfer). Any ideas on a good area in Manhattan to live?

If I didn't have a car I liked so much and if I wasn't upside down, I'd probably just sell the car but... this is no ordinary car.

Thanks again all for the info. Any advice on cars in NY or just NY tips in general are greatly appreciated.

Like Shocka said, try to register in either LI, Queens or Manhattan (or if you want, upstate, but I'm not sure about the rates there). A friend of mine said that Manhattan has the cheapest insurance out of all the 5 boroughs (true/false, I have no clue). I'm registered in Queens (parents house), but I live in Bklyn :p Brooklyn is very expensive, so try to avoid it.

Budebaker, if your working around 5th and 30th-ish st., there are 4 trains that you can take without transferring much: B + D (express) and F + V (local). They all run the 6th ave. line, so basically one NY block from 5th ave.

And as tips, this one is from my college professor.....Don't stare at new yorkers in the eyes when your riding the subway, because they will feel like your invading their "circle of defense". So in order to prevent eye contact, stare at the preparation H ad on top of the subway :D

what company will you be working for. If you are on 30th n 5th then you want to look into Murray Hill, lil pricey but GREAT area. It is becoming the new hot spot of NYC because it is close to Queen via the midtown tunnel, there are lot of Bars, Clubs, Restaurants, and just everything near by. Also if you try hard enough you can find a place walking distance to work and save the 79/month on the subway pass, which i will say reguardless living in NYC you should have.

Lets see NYC tips:
Cabs: The Yellow cabs have a sign on top w/ the Cab number and "Off Duty" If the numbers are Lighted(???) and the "off Duty" light is not on the cab is free. If there are no lights on the cab is enroute. Also when getting into a cab jump in close the door and tell them where you want to go, that way they will never reject you.

Remember for the most part NYC is a numbered grid. Uptown, Downtown referes to the streets and East Side and West Side refer to the Avenues. Streets are shorter then avenues. Walking 10 streets could take about 15 mins, while walking 10 Avenues, well ive never done it.

Oh this is something ive learned recently....NYC is the most expensive city in North America, BUT it can also be the cheapest! Look for deals, stay away from brand names. Mom and pop stores are great!

As for cars.. as long as u live in Manhattan and are going to be around manhattan most likely mass transit is more convientent then cars. The roads are really confusing at times, IE some streets you can no turn on at certain hours. Your car is simply for when you want to leave Manhattan and head to Queens/Long Island or Jersey.

One last thing, NYers are known to have the longest commute to work. On average a NYer spends 1 hour getting to work. So if you live and have to take a 30 min subway ride your Ahead of the average. so no complaining. I have a 1.5 hr commute so SHHH! and subway is apprently quicker then bus, I have never taken a bus so i dunt know how true it is.

I'm really torn over keeping the car? It's totally not necessary but it's such a great auto... Does any place rent RX-8's if I want to take a weekend trip outside of the city?

rents rx8s???? doubt it.. first lets try to find a stick to rent.

I do know of couple places in NYC that rent ferraris and other exotics, dont know if they carry 8s.

Ok my advice, save some money live in Queens (short train ride to manhattan) and keep the 8!
