Just about two weeks until the next event at devens....so who's going? I know Imp will be there. I'll be there. Who else is going?

Hey Noel,I don't plan on going to that event,but this coming sunday 06/05/05 I will be at devens for a renegade miata event.I will look into trying a SCCA event someday.I have never done one of them.I used to go every weekend at Otis AFB when it was open for events with Cape Cod sports car club,and the quechecan sports car club.I was wondering what air pressure do run on your car?I did the autocross at the revolution,and I didn't care what times I got so I didn't even adjust the pressures.I actually got the second best time of the day on one of the tracks for the RX-8 class,and best time of the day on the other,although I don't really trust the numbers.I felt like I was way out of control all day,but according to the time slips I was pretty fast compared to the others.The courses at the revolution were really wierd with 360's built into them and all,but they were challenging and fun.I love auto-X,it is the best bang for the buck in auto racing I think,and you don't need to have fast time of the day to have fun either.

I might try this. What are autocrosses like? Do I have to bring my own numbers for my car? Whats the cost? Is it just running cones ala Rev-It-Up?

You don't really have to bring anything aside from an empty car,helmet,and money.They usually have shoe polish for the numbers(on windows not body),and yes it is just like rev-it-up.You will have a blast,trust me.It is fun killin cones,and legally racing the car for a day.be ready to stand around in the rain,or sun all day while working the track,and bring something to drink,and eat.When I was doing it alot before september 11th of 01 it was the best $20-$25 I could spend on a sunday.I don't know what the SCCA events cost,but I would imagine it is around that same price.Go have some fun,but be warned you will be hooked.

Chris, Justin...man you got to come!!! It's friggin awesome.....The fee is $40 now for non-SCCA members. I worked the 1st and 2nd to last heats....went by fast and it was cool to be up and close to the action. You also get to see how others take a certain part of the course....there were plenty of loaner helmets there when I went too. I brought shoe polish...it would have worked perfect if it wasn't for the downpour that made it run and make a mess of the back of my car.....

Cons: you have to be thre early..I was there at 7:30am....
you have to find a way to get legible #'s on the car.
you have to pack a lunch and dress accordingly



pros: the best fun you can have for little money
You get to meet cool people
Get to see amazing cars up close, and see them in action
also improve you driving skills.

NER does not want shoe polish on cars. When it rains, it's a PITA. They want them to be readable and almost to SCCA rules which is 8" high with 1.25" stroke (1" would be fine as long as they're readable). and class letters at least 4" high. Just over the years, people got more and more lazy about having readable numbers and it really messes up timing. They also need to be in high contrast to the car so Blue on black is NOT a good idea.

You can print them on your printer and tape them to your car (using panters tape) or you can go to Home Depot and get gutter guard and cut them out.

I'd suggest doing the paper/painters tape idea if it's dry out. But the magnet is good for the wet. If you want nice numbers that you'll re-use for the rest of the year.. check my sig. I supply them to members of NER and other clubs in the area.

As far as the course goes.. it's Mazda Rev It Up x 5. The course is a mile long and averages about 60-80 seconds. There are instructors available to you should you want one to run with you, or for you to run in their car (if they'd let you... and most do). Find the novice chair and introduce yourself to him and he'll help you along with what you can exepct for the day. One of the differences to Rev it up is that EVERYONE works a section of the course and re-sets cones or performs some other task. Word to the wise... if you THINK it might rain, bring rain gear out with you. In the very least bring rain gear with you to the event.

About Otis: I remember running there in my Black 2.5RS Subaru. If you didn't put yourself in check going through the chute, you'd off into the trees. If you've never been to Devens, you're in for a treat. Nice, huge and open. Not confined like the Otis course was.. and eleventy billion times safer to boot.

Oh, one more thing...Renegade Miata sets up mitata sized courses... just be prepared for that. NER/NESCC events are a tad more open.

So KC will my RX-8 fit through the gates at the miata event?I went up to an event years ago at Devens that was supposed to be a miata event,but my friend told me the wrong day so I was there for a Taurus SHO club event with my 83 RX-7,and the course they had set up was really well suited for the SHO's,but not my little RX-7.I still had fun though even in the rain.I think that even if I have slowest time of the day(likely)I will still have a blast.

Oh yeah, you'll still have fun! And yes, you'll fit though the gates. It's the turing from gate to gate or through a slalom that might be a little tighter than average. (But not as tight as the slalom going out at Otis... that's the tightest slalom I've ever run on)

I autocrossed mine when it had 700 miles on it. It now has 28500 miles on it. So far so good.

Autocrossing(at last at the nice open Devens area) is easy on the car, compared to drag racing, drifting, or road racing.

I should have added that it also has almost 2 seasons of autocrosses on it. 1.75 of that is with a co-driver, so it's closer to 4 seasons of a single driver.
