i always use the mazda oem filters. you can get them at your local mazda dealer for like 8 bucks. you can find them online for a better price. IIRC rosenthal mazda has a sale thats like 5 oil filters for $25 and they also give you a free oil filter wrench.

and you should get a crush washer for the oil pan drain drain bolt. some people re-use the washer twice but i dont like taking any chances.

After seeing this convo, I gotta ask this question.

Am I allowed to do an oil change in my driveway? I was told that the DEP would fine me for doing it (my friend stated that if I was discrete about it, they wouldn't care). I can't seem to find any law regarding this, and the DEP website only tells me about the disposal of the oil.

I can't make it to meets on weekdays, I can only do this on a weekend. It's going to be my first oil change, but I've got one or two friends to help.

Also, Noodle - "and you should get a crush washer for the oil pan drain drain bolt"
I'll assume I can get this washer from any hardware store?

jarred: my bad i coulda sworn it was for the 8. unless i seen another one some where.

jin: i never heard of that. i think your friend is misinformed or messin with you. ive never heard of that but what do i know.

and as for the washer im not sure about the washer being bought at a hardware store.

if your buyin a filter from mazda theyll sometimes give it to you for free or charge you like a buck each.

and that fumoto quick drain valve seems like a pretty cool mod. maybe ill get it someday. btw is called quick oil drain valve now and thats the same for the site name.

yeah heres the link:

but like i said if you want to do your oil change soon then it would be faster for you to get this and the filter from a local mazda dealership.

Alright thanks. I'll try to get that washer sometime this week.

Regarding the DEP thing, my worry is because I don't know who the DEP would fine. If it was just myself, then I'm more than fine with being responsible for it. However, if the DEP fines the homeowner of the driveway, that would be bad since I don't own the house.
