Forced Induction passing emissions please help

Does anyone know if a turboed Rx-8 would pass emissions in Massachusetts? I have researched, and get all sorts of answers. If so, is there only certain turbo kits that will comply? I was thinking the protech turbo kit. What about a supercharger? Will a Pettit supercharger pass?

I don't know the answer. But I would suggest that you talk to some local shops. Many times the custom shops and tuner shops will, um, be able to ensure you pass.

depends on what your emissions check involves.

if they are checking for a CEL, then you'd pass if you run the Ultimate or AccessPort for fuel management, since those are the only two that can function without a cel.

If you're catless, then only the AccessPort can mask out CELs.

If they do a visual inspection, you might pass with an exhaust mounted turbo system since it's out of the way and hidden.

If they check for emissions in your exhaust pipe, then if you're running the stock cat, or a high flow cat, then you can pass with a turbo too.

So the reason why no one has a definite answer for you, is because the answer depends on what setup you go with.

If you used an OBDII Scanner to clear the codes, would it then be passable through OBDII inspection? Or only AccessPORT? And even with the AccessPORT, does that work regardless of what the exhaust sensors might be reading? It doesn't matter if its catless?

If you clear the codes right before going, their equipment will notify them that the computer hasn't had enough drive cycles to accurately determine the state of health of the emissions equipment. So no, that won't work.

And clearing the codes everytime you drive wouldn't matter either?

correct, if you clear the codes you need somewhere between 3-5 drive cycles or the computer wont pass you. you can try the defouler mod, that has worked for some... the best way is to get the Cobb AP

yeah, I just don't want to shell out money for an AP since I already have an Int-X. I might be able to borrow one if I find a local who has it though.

Someone mentioned to me that defouler method, I didn't really understand though, how does that work? I gotta mod the sensors basically? Is that a pain?

Best way is to find an emissions friendly shop and throw them extra cash. I wouldn't ask just anyone though as you could get into some trouble. If it wont pass they can always run w/o signal (not plugged in) however this only works for a year bc a signal is required the following year. This is the way it works in Pa anyways, too bad you dont live around here.

paying someone wont work anyway because they NEED to plug it in if they want the sticker to print out... the way the fouler mod works is you take a spark plug defouler and screw it into the o2 bung, then put the o2 back in.... the theory is the sensor is out of direct flow of the emissions gases so its only sampling a small amount of gas, and therefor thinks your emissions arent as bad... look here for more details.

Thanks for the link, I'll read up. Yeah it's a big pain in NY, everything is kept track of in databases.
