Finally got stopped for no front plate (VA)
Only took 6 months but I got stopped today and given a warning for not having a front plate.
Luckly I had the plate, still attached to the broken bell mount + a new unopened bell mount sitting behind my seat.
Guess I have to get off my lazy bum and install the dumb thing cause now if I get stopped again for anything, they have a note. If the plate isn't there, then I'll get fined for it.

Do those absurd and despicable VA fines apply to a plate violation?
I've had a few roadside conversations about my lack of plate here in RI. 4 mentions by Johnny Law that my lack of plate is a violation, but only one ticket for no front plate in 4 years of ownership.
I believe that ticket cost me $75 (maybe $85?) and I paid it without grumbling. I figure it works out to about $20 per year to not wear a front plate, which I would gladly pay to the DMV if I had the option.

I think, you can only be fined for no front plate if you get pulled over for something else, kind of like not wearing a seatbelt, but now I'm not so sure how it work....
Don't know if he did it just to tell me and mark it or if he could have fined me on the spot and just didn't.
Even if the fine is low, I'm would never hear the end of it from the wife....It's not that bad with the bell plate mount but at the same time it kind of sucks being there. Most certainly not as bad as it being smack in the middle of the grill.

Hi all. I'm new to the forum. I just bought a 2007 velocity red RX-8 and I'm loving it. Does anybody know what the penalty is for no front plate in MA? I've noticed many cars at shows (lots of Corvettes and customs) that do not have any front plate so I said, "**** it" and took off my front plate because the front end looks soooo much better without it. I got pulled over (on Mother's day with wife and kids in the car!!!!) and got a warning for going 40+ in a 30 mph zone. The police officer didn't say (notice?) anything about no front plate. Do they really care?

I think 40+ means Fourty-something in a 30.
Don't know what the MA fine is but it's hit or miss with any individual officer. I'd say most don't care about something like that, but they'll issue a ticket to anyone dumb enough to be an *** when pulled over.

In Virginia, there's no provision stating you have to be stopped for another offense to get ticketed for missing a front plate:
§ 46.2-715. Display of license plates.
License plates assigned to a motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle, tractor truck, trailer, or semitrailer, or to persons licensed as motor vehicle dealers or transporters of unladen vehicles, shall be attached to the front and the rear of the vehicle. The license plate assigned to a motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer shall be attached to the rear of the vehicle. The license plate assigned to a tractor truck shall be attached to the front of the vehicle. The license plates issued to licensed motor vehicle dealers and to persons licensed as transporters of unladen vehicles shall consist of one plate for each set issued and shall be attached to the rear of the vehicle to which it is assigned.

Update for me: ran my beater front plate-less from Nov through April traveling to central NY, CT, MA, VT, NH and ME with no issue. Currently run my 8 plate-less last 1~1/2 months. Drove from CT straight down to VA and back with no issue, travel at times to central NY and back with no issue.

Hmmm. I haven't had a front plate on my 8 in NJ for about... 3 - 3 1/2 years. I didn't have one on my previous car for maybe 2 years before that. I've been pulled over for it maybe 3 times, have at least 1 ticket, 1 warning. i consider it a form of road tax. My 8 doesn't have a front grill to put it on and I really don't want to. Not having a front plate may have gotten me out of a tint ticket as the cop wrote the ticket for the plate instead.
They made a rule. I broke it. They charged me $54. I'm ok with that.

(though in this particular case, I would have fought the speeding ticket and won, so I may have been better off getting that instead.)

The Virginia plate rules will apply only to Virginia tagged cars since some other states don't require a front plate (reciprocity). I have no idea how tight other states are about front plate rules.

I figure paying the "front plate waiver fee" of $65 once every few years is not unreasonable.

^Nope, you flip it out before they come up to your window and ask them to recheck it (the plate, not your middle finger)
That's my plan anyhow, and I have that since this winter but yet to install it yet. I'll let you know what goes down when and if I get pulled over

There is a concept called "don't invite the man into your life".
Simply put don't give them a reason to pull you over and dig into your business. This avoid hassle on both ends.
I've seen tail light stops morph into full out drug stops and DUI arrests. In some states they'll start searching your car and "sniffing" pot.
Best not to let them in your life.

I got pulled over specifically because there was NO front plate. There was ZERO reason for him to stop me other wise. I was stopped at a stop sign. he went by and then spun right around and stopped me. Sorry, you can say what you want, but they can stop you for random stuff and what are you going to do, tell him to go away?
If you had had a front plate you wouldn't have this story to tell.
