Fatal RX-8 crash in Tom's River NJ

sad... be careful on the streets... reserve going fast for the track.

TOMS RIVER — A car carrying seven teenagers crashed into a utility pole and overturned here Saturday night, killing one passenger and seriously injuring another. The accident happened at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Route 35 South and Kingfisher Lane in the Ocean Beach section of Toms River, Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said.

Alex Aravena, 17, of Roselle Park, Union County, was traveling south in a 2005 Mazda when the vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole and overturned.
Two of the six passengers, Anthony Casselli, 17, and Kelly Angus, 14, were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, with serious injuries.
Casselli died from his injuries Sunday afternoon, Mastronardy said.
Angus' condition could not be determined because the hospital is prohibited from releasing that information about minors.
Toms River Police EMS transported Aravena and the other passengers, Melissa Pereira, 14, Samantha Ardino, 14, Alisha Dipiaza, 14, and Tom Pardist, 18, all of Roselle Park, to Community Medical Center for treatment.
The southbound roadway was closed and traffic was detoured until 5 a.m. Sunday as authorities investigated the accident and utility company workers replaced the pole.
Mastronardy could not say how many of the teens were wearing seat belts because the incident is still under investigation. The driver has not been charged, he said.
Brick, Mantoloking and Lavallette police and a Department of Transportation emergency response unit assisted with traffic. Lavallette and Ortley Beach First Aid also responded.
Sgt. Michael Belcher and Traffic Safety Officers Gary Flynn and Ralph Stocco are investigating the accident, assisted by the Ocean County Sheriff's Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Sad, i wonder where he put all those kids... i dont know of any rx8 that had an optional bench seat. Mine only Seats 4 (including me)

I think the driver should be charged for being a dumbass and killing one of his friends.. and for cramming 6 others into a car meant for 3 others...

I'd say no one was wearing a seatbelt with that many people in the car. And look at the ages, WTF?

"sad... be careful on the streets... reserve going fast for the track."

How do you know he was going fast? He could have lost control or the accident could have happened for a number of reasons. You people need to get off the high horse -- If the cops don't even know what happen i doubt any of you do as well.

While sad I do not think that car is an RX-8, I think its a mazda 3. Seven people, even teens is a had thing to do in an 8. RX-8s also do not have a red reflector on the rear bumper like that, Mazda 3's do. The trim on the door is Mazda 3 like.

wtf? 7 people is just retarded. It's an rx8, not a taurus. Even so though, having more people than seat belts is dumb. They may not have been going fast, however I can't see someone rolling an rx8 with normal driving, unless they rolled it of a cliff. Or maybe they had all 6 passengers on the right side of the vehicle and took a sharp left. There are a number of things that could have caused this, as well as a few that could have helped prevent this mess.

I think Expo is correct... The rear 1/4 glass is WAYYYY too big to be an rx8

I would agree now that you mention it. At first glance, it does look like an 8. But, look at the rear doors. They are full size. Not the freestyle doors of an 8.

and it is a mazda 3. The rear doors...

horrible, none the less. I'm 18 and still in high school. I see kids doing this all the time.

this is always sad to see... its been almost a year since my best friend wrapped his STI around a tree in columbus ohio killing him, his girlfriend in the passenger seat and leaving his girlfriends twin sister who was in the backseat a life without her other half because she survived...

my prayers are with the families of those lost and those still living...

the ones that die are not the ones that suffer through the pain... its us who have to go on without them for the rest of our lives who really feel the pain... there is not a day that goes by that i do not think about my best friend leaving this world with the rest of us down here morning his death

+1^ I am 18 in high school as well and I constantly see people from school being stupid with their cars. We have car related deaths all the time around here, you'd think people would learn from their friends deaths but everyone seems to forget...

Yeah.. I was thinking. If it was an RX-8, you would have two people per seat besides the driver. Can you imagine two people sitting in the back seats? Rofl.

I agree with you 100%. When I was a senior in high school, some kid had a 350z (it was literally brand new...had dealer tags on it still) and one day, he thought he was invincible, took a turn too fast, fishtailed, and crashed into a telephone pole.

Just kind of odd to lose control to the point of hitting a pole and flipping in a FWD car.

Must have been excessive speed..

Students mourn loss of teen in TR crash

By MARGARET F. BONAFIDE
STAFF WRITER

Students at the Roselle Park High School received grief counseling on Sunday and Monday as they learned the news that the captain of the wrestling team died and six
other students were injured in an accident Saturday night in Toms River.

The crash killed Anthony Casselli, 17, a wrestling star at Roselle Park High School. Casselli was a passenger in the car, police said.

Sarah Costa, principal at the Roselle Park High School where the student population is 658 said this was the first fatal crash that she was aware of at the small school.

Costa said she received a call Sunday morning about the accident and called parents and members of the school district's crisis team.

Excessive speed is being considered as the possible cause of the fatal accident that killed the Roselle Park teen who was a passenger in a Mazda 3 compact car with six other teens Saturday night, police said.

One 14-year-old teen, Kelly Angus, of Roselle Park, remains hospitalized at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and is in stable condition, said Chief Michael G.
Mastronardy.

Police are investigating where the teens were going at the time of the crash, Mastronardy said. Authorities received information that the teens had left Roselle Park and that they could have been coming to the area in search of a teen-night type of event, Mastronardy said.

"We have not been able to confirm that," Mastronardy said.

About 300 students gathered at a field across the street from the school on Sunday and were brought inside where they sat together.

There was a profound silence for about an hour among the students, Costa said.

Officials provided pizza and drinks for the kids and after a while they began talking about their grief, Costa said.

Counselors and staff met with students to help them process their grief for the boy who was the award-winning wrestling team captain with a record 36 wins and 5 losses.

Melissa Pereira, 14; Samantha Ardino, 14; Alisha Dipiaza, 14; and Tom Pardisi, 18, all of Roselle Park were in the car driven by Alex Aravena, 17, of Roselle Park. They were all taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River where they were treated and released.

The car is registered to Claudia Aravena, of Dalton Street, Roselle Park. Her relationship with the driver is unknown, Mastronardy said.

The crash happened 9:30 p.m. Saturday on Route 35 South at Kingfisher Lane in the Ocean Beach section. Witnesses, other than the individuals in the vehicle said the vehicle appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed, Mastronardy said.

so i guess this means Juansito can stfu about "how do you know they were going fast"...

One look at the car and how it hit a pole is more then enough to see it wasnt going the speed limit. I sure do hope they charge the driver with criminally negligent homicide. Or at least manslaughter. He ended lives therefore his life is forfeit.
