Columbus 8 owners

I want to say the autox last sun was pretty neat, never been to one of those. I did get a chance to meet rx8rider and saw success07 car.(gotta say, pretty nice)
Anyway i was at mazda direct today and saw 3 other 8s in service. There was 2 ti gray and a red with app package. Just wondering why they were in there. Oil change? Other problems? I had my 8 in last week, everytime i would brake at very low speed my car would squeak. I thought they fixed the problem by giving me new brake pads but it's even worse! So i took it in today and they just glazed my rotor(temporary to stop the noise, but doesnt help). And there going to order me new rotors by next week.

Well if anyone is interested, this sun is going to be nice again. Just seeing if anyone want to get together for a short meet( i duno, 1hr?) I was thinking lunch at quaker lube in polaris (bad 1st experience, right alpha?) But im willing to go..post if anyone has other ideas or suggestions...

RX8rider 04-13-2005 10:12 PM

I'm having the same problem with the brakes. That aweful squaling noise is bugging the hell out of me! I take my car to MazdaDirect, and so far they've been really good about service, updates...They should be getting the new brake parts in this week so I'll et you know if it help once they fix it.

Kicker774 04-14-2005 08:19 AM

I'm thinking about hitting the hills and twisties of some the backroads south of Lancaster after work tomorrow.

We could meet up here at Bob Boyd around 6 and go from there.
Probably be a few of my Honda friends as well.

alphapenguin 04-14-2005 08:19 AM

the guy in my office -which one of these usernames are you jin?- just got the new N-flash and he says that he feels more power in the low er power band.

kellybrf 04-14-2005 06:45 PM

just took mine into byers today and there was another red and a black in, but not sure for what. they replaced my pads (second time) to fix my squeek, well see if that works.

RA-Eight 04-14-2005 09:30 PM

I need to take mine in as well. She only squeaks braking at lower speed. I heard if you brake late you can get rid of the squeak, at least temporarily. I typically brake gradually and supposedly that doesn't help the noise, but makes it worse. I don't know....I'm thinking of switching to Hawk HPS.

I keep forgetting to check in the regional forums, and completely missed the last outting! I'd be down for a quick meet/lunch somewhere early afternoon-ish. Supposed to be beautiful all weekend!

RA-Eight 04-14-2005 09:35 PM

Oh, btw, yesterday I saw a B-Black on Hayden Run, stopped and waved at ya. Also, on the same trip, saw a Blue by Grove City, waved at you too! (I was in the TiGray)

Hung_horse31 04-15-2005 06:32 AM

Ra- eight..that might have been me you saw on hayden rd. What time was it?
On another note, i saw a ti gray with app package last sat on 270(over by cemetary rd) i honked and waved..

Regarding this weekend, Im fine with anything we do. More than likely on sat i.m going to wash my car and wax her we can all meet then. As for sun, just post if your interested.

Anyone down for this tonight?

success07 04-15-2005 07:54 AM

I have plans tonight Kicker but I will surely go another time.

Anyone like Cold Stone Creamery? There's one on 23 and Campus View (Crosswoods - North Worthington). Could meet there for some ice cream and then take a drive up to Polaris Pkwy, Easton, etc. 1p-ish this Sunday?

MichRX7 04-15-2005 08:33 AM

Hmm...next weekend you could hook up with all the rotary owners coming out of Columbus over to Indy for the Rotary Revolution!

Kicker774, we just received our posters yesterday from the printer so I was unable to send you one to display in the store. I do think you should tell your boss he should let you take an RX-8 out and come to the event in a business research capability because we will be hitting up your dealership to be a sponsor next year. ;)

Two autocross tracks, two days of drag racing, 11 seminars, 200+ rotary vehicles. Click my signature for more information.

Kicker774 04-15-2005 08:53 AM

Unfortunatley it looks like the only people that can take cars out for daily driver or whatever are the owner and the Sales Manager.

Not even the 2 top guys selling 25+ cars a month are driving anything off the lot.

Closest I'll come is asking for a day of for the American LeMans becuase I've been personally invited by [insert mazda race team here] :)

I am coming down this Saturday for my complimentary 4K oil change at Bob Boyd's and was thinking about heading out into the hills afterwards. Is there a particular road that is the best to take? I know all the roads around "Lankster" are pretty twisty but I asume that some are better than others.

Kicker774 04-15-2005 09:41 AM

Take Rt 793 south of Lancaster.

Pretty gentle curves at first, then you go through a prison area, after that the road goes into alot more 15 - 25 mph right angle turns adn like 120 degree curves and all that.

Just simply get lost down there.

When your here Saturday be sure to stop by and ask for me:
1. So I can check out your RX-8
2. So it makes it look like I'm getting important around here when people start asking for me :)

Thanks!

It was around 5:30-6pm. Right after work. Were you coming from Frantz Rd and made a right onto Riverside Dr?

That TiGray on 270 might've been me as well. Although I do see another TiGray in that area, often. Older guy.

I can't do tonight, I'll be in Granville for a concert. But I might be available for a Sunday afternoon outting. Ice scream sounds good though, Success!

Hung_horse31 04-15-2005 07:36 PM

I should be able to make it. Alpha are you going??

Hung_horse31 04-16-2005 09:31 PM

Success07 are we still planning to meet around 1? Alpha and i will be attending. Anyone else that is stopping by should post so we can have idea who to expect.

zelig2 04-16-2005 10:28 PM

Where was the concert in Granville? I was just there this afternoon playing tennis and hanging out with some friends downtown.

I live over near Cemetery Rd in Hilliard so it could easily be my TiGray 8 in that area.

I'd be up for going to Cold Stone any time as I love that place. I used to go there all the time when I lived in California. (Coffee, Mocha, Dark Chocolate ice cream w/ Cold Fudge & Brownie mixed in for a shake).

RA-Eight 04-17-2005 09:23 AM

Z-The concert was at Springhill Baptist Friday night. I drove through downtown Granville around 5ish. Did you play tennis at Denison's courts? I graduated from DU '02.

I may be stopping by Crosswoods to meetup with you guys today, all depending on when I'm outta church. Hope to see y'all there!

Ra

success07 04-17-2005 11:29 AM

I'll be there at 1p. Cold Stone at the Crosswoods. See everyone there!

zelig2 04-17-2005 01:11 PM

Whoops, didn't realise it was today. Oh well, next time for sure.

I used to go to Springhill's Babtist when I was in high school (grad 95) in Granville. We first went to the Denison courts but they were pretty crowded so we went to the high school courts so we could have a little room. Most of us haven't played in ages so it was nice not worrying about our balls going everywhere. Where do you live in Columbus? I'm over in Hilliard.

Well I finally have time today so I'm going to change the tires, check the oil, mow the yard and get a few other things done today. Next time I'll try to meet up.

Hey guys i thought i would post some pictures i took from the little get together we had. It was nice to meet you all.
Ra-eight, I noticed that you had a radar detector, what brand is it? And does it work pretty good?? After we left, I got pull over for speeding.(I normally go the speed limit..) So im in the market for one, if anyone has any suggestions or had great experience with a particular brand let me know.
Also, another question, does anyone have squeaking noise when pressing the clutch down or releasing it? The last couple of days ive noticed that . Maybe i need to spray some wd-40.

E- That really blows, I'm sorry it happened. I've had my radar detector for a while now. It's a Cobra, and it's saved me out of a few potential tickets. It's not the best, but it does the job. I'm thinking about maybe moving on to a Passport. I know they're highly recommended, along with Valentine, K-40, but be ready to shell out some money.

It was cool to meet you guys today. Here are some pics also...

Ra

RX8rider 04-17-2005 10:14 PM

Hey guys! Sorry I missed the meet today...I was trading in my At for a sweet MT. I went to Ricart and they had a brand new 6 speed 04 left over and I got a sick deal on it...didn't even lose on the trade! Anyhow, I'm back in RX8 heaven once again. As far as the radar detector, I have the Escort Passport 8500 x50 hardwires to my dome light. It's a clean install and it's saved me quite a few times. Well worth the $300 I spent.

zelig2 04-18-2005 11:28 AM

Looks like fun. Do any of you guys get hassled at all for not having license plates on the front? I'd love to take mine off but I don't really feel like having it be an issue with the cops.

kellybrf 04-18-2005 12:22 PM

i got my first ticket a few weeks ago for the plate. i was downtown which im not too familar with, so had circled the block about four times to find the right entrance to the parking garage and finally on the last go round the cop who had watched me do this pulled me over. $81 was kinda expensive, but no points on the license so its not a huge deal.

i have a v1 but only use it for longer trips. be smart and look as far ahead as you can, plus watch for others brake lights and youll get out of more tickets then you will with the detector. they give a false sense of security. i actually got out of one yesterday headed home. i was on 270 about to get off on sawmill going around 85 when i noticed the cop. he saw me and pulled out, but i got over into the exit lane and he couldnt pull me over before i got off and he coudnt get over :)

im gonna have to do one of these autox events soon, unfortunately i had to work yesterday.

Huhwha 04-18-2005 12:27 PM

Knock on wood, no problems with no plate yet, but I get a look from every cop I pass. Hard to blend in though when you're riding around in a bright red sports car!

zelig2 04-18-2005 12:52 PM

Oh well, I guess I'll survive with it on for now. I used to have a laser/radar detector but stopped using it in my last vehicle. The noise from the false positives annoyed me way to much to keep it in all the time. I'd probably use it on long trips but I haven't gone more than 2 hours out of Columbus in my car.

Wurmfist 04-18-2005 01:52 PM

I wish Cleveland was as active as you guys. In any case, I've been wanting to take route 555 for some time now. I heard a nasty rumor that they put gravel down on it. Anyone know if that is true or not?

Sorry for the double-post but I have a X50 Passport 8500 by Escort and it is dead-on accurate on the highways and open streets. If it goes off, I had better slow down. I don't think there is any Radar/Laser Detector that works 100% of the time in the City. There's just too much stray RF flying around. I don't speed in cities anyhow, just on open roads with few driveways, or highways. So I wouldn't give up on radar detectors just yet, I love mine!

Also what's nice about the X50 is that it has a muting circuit that automatically shuts the noise off when it's been on for a second or two so it's not annoying at all. It also automatically switches between highway and city and cancels out alot of false alarms.

Hung_horse31 04-23-2005 11:50 AM

Well just got my new brake rotors install and the squealing has stopped. Mazda direct service mgr told me that the left rotor was glazed(ra-eight, remember those lines with the rust on my rotor, that you pointed out last week?) The service mgr said it was due to heavy braking, but i had to disagree with him. I only have 3,000 miles and if one brake rotor goes bad, the other should also, not just the left side. And for the fact, i dont brake hard, just normal driving. He said after looking at the brake rotor it looked like ive been driving over 50,000 miles. I think what happen was when i took my car in 2 weeks ago they gave me new brake pads and they must have put the left pad incorrectly which caused it to glazed. I noticed that day after i got my car back, the squealing was even worst! Which is why i got new brake rotors..

Anyway the service mgr said he would replace it as a courtesy, but not in the future. I think he knew they made a mistake from installing the brake pads, b/c all 3 brake rotors were perfectly fine. And if it's my fault from braking hard, the right brake rotor should also had gone bad. Any updates on other 8s that have squealing when breaking?

Which dealership did you take it to?

Kicker774 04-23-2005 02:08 PM

Yea I'd be curious to see how well people are serviced here at Bob Boyd compared to Ricart and the other Mazda dealers in the area.

I talked to an 8 owner a few days ago (Flooding issue looked like) said Ricart replaced the clutch and a number of other thigns and he was still having problems so he decided to take it here to Bob Boyd. Dunno how he turned out, looks like he got back on the road as I don't see his 8 here anymore.

Huhwha 04-23-2005 02:16 PM

Guess I have to throw a strike against Mazda Direct. I called to make an appointment for an oil change and the "milky dipstick" problem. We talked about the TSB and I told them it would need a new dipstick & sleeve.

You guessed it - got there and after waiting for an hour, they tell me they don't have the parts! Good job guys - right on the ball you are.

On the upside, I had it almost stall after making my appointment. When I arrived wetalked about that and they flashed me up to N. So far, so good.

Guess it's back to Ricart, but that's a hella haul.

Kicker774 04-23-2005 02:42 PM

Huhwha, have you had service done at Ricart before? Any gripes/praises/opinions on them?
I'd invite you to come down to Bob Boyd see how they do for you.

After your service I'd mroe more than happy to join you on a little cruise through the backroads south of Lancaster. I'm sure that would make it worth your while.

Huhwha 04-23-2005 07:32 PM

Kicker,

As far as gripes, Ricart should have flashed it to M before delivery in October. They fixed it, but it cost me another trip down there.

We should set up a meet at your joint and take a trip through the hills.

HungHorse-
I'm glad you got it taken care of. I like how they're making it look like they're doing you a favor . I haven't heard of any honorable service dealers around here. Hopefully you got rid of the squeal for good. I need to take mine in for the squeal also. I haven't noticed it too bad lately. I've been braking late and hard (an advise from another member), and it seems to work. Of course with all this rain and snow , I haven't had the windows down to really listen.

On another note, I installed my stealth bulbs I got from autolumination.com on all four corners, and it looks really good. Thanks to Success for the advise. Cheap and quick shipment.

Before and after of the fronts:

kellybrf 04-23-2005 11:39 PM

ive gottena few bulbs from them with mixed results. i like the bulbs and prices, but ive had two 194 lcds go out on me in under a year, and i ordered led rear blinkers (i have the stealth, but they can be weak) but theres not enough resistance and he wouldnt take them back or do anything. claimed there was a warning on the website, but the warning is actually for different size bulbs

alphapenguin 04-24-2005 03:06 PM

are these http://autolumination.com/images/auto_bulbs/194a_sv.jpg
stealth amber 194's comprable to stealth bulbs sold for 30 bucks?

kellybrf 04-24-2005 05:45 PM

yes they are. i have them on mine and theyve been fine, but as i said they are dim (especially in sunlight) due to the chroming

It's fricken georgous outside right now. Too windy to stand outside but awsome driving weather. Too bad rest of the week looks like rain.

Best days for me are Tusday, Thursdays, or Saturdays since I only work till 5.
Though I could be persuaded to drive on anytime on a Friday since it's my day off.

Sweet! Welcome to the board! :) I think there's only one other TiGray, with a sunroof deflector in Grove City and that one is always parked at Krogers on Stringtown. I'm guessing he/she's a pharmacist or one very lucky rich cartboy. ;)

Kicker774 04-30-2005 11:11 AM

Hmm another doctor/nurse/pharmacist with an RX-8
I'll have to make an appointment with my doctor sometime soon, see if I can sell him one.
.. oh wait ... I don't have any health insurance yet.

Maybe I shoudl buy some ad space in the American medical journal magazine (That can't be the right name for what I'm thinking but you get the gist)

Huhwha 04-30-2005 06:13 PM

Kicker,

I'll be down & out for about 10 days after surgery on May 12th. After that, I'm good to go for a drive! Hopefully by then the weather improves!

Kicker774 05-01-2005 09:58 AM

Actually I was just going to mention a drive today it looks great out, though a bit windy.
The dealership is having a "weekend blowout" so we're open today (Sunday) untill 4:30.
Come "test drive" an RX-8 :)

TweeeK 05-02-2005 01:01 PM

hey Ra-Eight i have seen you deffintly then and before while i was slowly bumping a midnight blue protege 5 until i got my 8,,and thanks for the welcome,,,i also have seen the ti at the krogers parking lot before and thought it was yours,,i guess i stand corrected on the count of 8's in GC

RA-Eight 05-06-2005 11:49 AM

Am I the only one who is nervous everytime I start my car? I get some hard starts sometimes and Byers told me that they will need the car overnight to test it.

I heard the dealers are beginning to replace starters and batteries with a new type/kind if you are having issues with hard starts and flooding. Has anyone here done this? If so, what dealer?

Ra

Hung_horse31 05-06-2005 02:53 PM

HEy ra- Do you have the newest n flash? Ive heard that with the new flash, it helps from preventing cold starts. Do you ever rev your engine to 3500 for 5 seconds before shutting it off? I do it everytime and i havnt had any problems yet.

kellybrf 05-06-2005 08:15 PM

ive never flooded it, but do have hard starts often. im pretty sure its just a weak battery
