I lived in NYC for many years before moving to the country. I have never drvien anything but manual, so I couldn't say how much better automatic would be - but I had no problems driving manual at all in NYC. In fact, it was fun, helps avoid the taxis and gets where you're going.
I had two CRXs while living in NYC - other than the obligatory dings and scratches, I thought small, light sports cars were the best for the streets of NY.
What grad school ?
And what will you be doing for parking? If it's street parking, you may think about selling it and getting a real beater - it WILL get beaten.

thanks for the responses so far..

affenage: i am looking at either Baruch of Fordham for an MBA. If its street parking then I am not taking a car into the city. I am lookin for an apt with a garage that i can afford.

right now the other option is to live in Long Island city.

Well, if it's Fordham (that's up in da Bronx, isn't it) there are a few places up there I can see having an apartment and a garage. But in Manhattan? I highly doubt you'll find anything. LI city, also consider Park Slope. Both easy access to downtown, but cheaper.
In the Bronx, look at Pelham Pkwy, Morris Park, Throgs Neck, Pelham Bay. All phenomenally easy commute to Fordham. But all of these are easily a 30 minute drive out from mid town.
Plenty of neighborhoods in Queens - I just don't know them. But forget finding an apartment in Manhattan with garage. Unless your uncle is Donald Trump.

affenage, the Fordham Business school is actually located in NYC. As for the Don.. The thing is i wanna live in NYC itself for the party life also. I am lookin into LIC. LIC i might actually go in and buy an apt instead of renting.
