2009 New England Rally

(1 participants experience... Original author Fuinn Salmi driver of the BMW M)

Well a group of petrol heads did the annual invasion of New England again this year. In a yearly event dubbed "the rally for the rest of us" there were people from Mass., Conn, Maryland and one team even drove 17 hours to get to the start from Canada to take part and see how far they could push themselves and their vehicles.

This year the proceeds in part went to the Boys & Girls Club of New England and we gathered behind the Salisbury Mass location, where the kids helped to wash and sticker the cars and bikes and provided some food while we got our marching orders.

Just as the collection of Highway Scofflaws was pulling out to the 1st checkpoint, The Old North Bridge at Minute Man National Park, where the Shot Heard Around the World was fired and the American Revolutionary War began in earnest, the rain started to come down .

And would continue till after the second 2nd checkpoint on the Kancamagus highway. A 32 mile long mountain road.

Checkpoint 2 was a bit of a cluster what with the Checkpoint not well marked but the roads were great and it also marked the beginning of the end of the rain too. Great views and an awesome road I recommend it to anyone that is travelling through the area as a must do detour.

The dam at the second Connecticut Lake in Pittsburg New Hampshire, better known as Moose Alley was the location of the 3rd checkpoint and it was a great ride out to it.

Lots of small resort towns to cruise through in the beginning with both food and gas choices and then some truly awesome views and twisty roads,

um wait pavement ends? (By this tiem it was too dark to take pictures)

It was a challenge but fun to the Dam checkpoint (lol)! Winding down the wet muddy dirt road to get there was an interesting twist that was commented on by many. This stop’s highlight was the Evo 8 rally car bolting on the 32 MILLION candle power light pod...

oh and the fireworks were a nice touch to get everyone back on the road. Upon leaving and hitting the nearest gas station to be harassed by the local MTI (Moose Turd Inspector) wanna be cop put us in the mood for some serious fun on the mountain roads.

With the Evo leading the way spreading light for everyone and scaring the Moose and Deer off to the sides of the roads, we tackled the winding and twisting roads to the next check point. (side note… saw lots of signs for Moose but not a single one for Squirrel… and we all know there is big trouble for moose and squirrel Boris!)

Maine Indoor Karting in Scarborough Maine was the longest checkpoint stop of the trip. 3 blessed hours of rest if you wanted it or you could ride those amazingly fast karts and get some food. The people there were great and even though we smelled funny and some looked like the living dead they were happy to see us all. It was a great place for the 4th checkpoint.

Lots of people say they feel like they have gone to the ends of the map on road trips but checkpoint 5 was truly that. Lubec Maine is the most Eastern part of the USA. It is truly the edge of the map. So our crazy route planner decided it was a place we really needed to see and off into the sunrise we went, 5.5 hours away and WELL worth the ride!

Miles were eaten up and the sun got brighter and the vistas we saw were fitting of oil paintings. I’m not just being eloquent either it was truly breathtaking views, the whole morning mists on fields forest lined horizons and everything!

The 6th checkpoint was a quick dash to the Passamaquoddy Indian nation Heritage Cultural Museum where we then got the last set of directions to check point 7, the end, and the finish, the place where we could shower and sleep! Oh wait, its where?? Vermont? How far is that? 7 hours! Oh crap! I’ll need a potty break I think.

OK welcome to Vermont. Home of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream and the Trapp Family Lodge. Backtracking a bit and finding a great little local burger place to fill our bellies and the gas tanks we made the 6 hour or so ride to checkpoint 7.

Blasting down one side of the mountain roads and roaring up the other side feeling your body pressed into the seats on the turns was great. It was what we were all doing this crazy madcap run for…

umm what do you mean pavement ends? Oh damn it. Blasting down the highway and maybe going well over the posted speed limits could have been an additional bonus too (not that this was a race or that anyone encouraged that type of behavior either).
Oh you have got to be kidding me... ANOTHER gravel road? This one going up a mountain… wonderful, this place had better be worth the abuse on my poor car and not some motel 6 …..

Oh my God this place is simply amazing!!!

The hills were truly alive with the sound of music only it was from the exhaust systems echoing off the mountains (perfect pitch if you asked me)
[

Oh blessed showers and clean clothes.

Drinks and an amazing dinner followed with more drinks...

Then a nice soft comfortable bed.
For this writer it was 36 hours of being awake and driving so that bed could have been made of nails and I would have slept just fine. 8 hours of sleep and down for the culmination of it all.

This is the route: http://tinyurl.com/2009NewEnglandRallyRoute

No not the breakfast buffet or that light and fluffy pancakes and crunchy bacon but the end of the Rally. The goodbyes the hell yeah I will see you next year and the GPS mocking me and saying 8 more hours of driving ahead.
