Colorado

Any RX-8 owners out there from Colorado, or am I the first to get one?

Bolder8 10-12-2003 08:30 PM

There are a few here from what I can gather. Picked mine up last week and love it! Saw another one on the road for the first time Saturday morning.

Digisan 10-12-2003 11:30 PM

Ordered in Jan, picked it up in July, first allotment.

Omicron 10-15-2003 10:17 AM

Bolder8, you might have seen me Saturday as I was down Denver way to get my car detailed. Mine's Titanium... is that the color you saw?

So where did you both get your cars? I got mine at Mazda of Lakewood and have been really happy with them.

Kewl 10-19-2003 04:30 PM

How about New Mexico.....I'm in Albuquerque. I've only seen one other RX8 around town, but surely there are more.

Jazzman 10-19-2003 07:20 PM

I got mine in early Sept. I was trying to figure out the best license plates (color) for my car, and settled for the old personalized blue plates that I had on my Miata. I didn't want green or white ones.

2004 Titanium Gray 6 speed sport with Navigation. Black cloth seats. I'm in Castle Rock.

Hey dude, I live in Socorro, (70 miles south). I saw a red RX-8 on I-25 approaching the Big I (I have the driver a thunbs up showing my approval). I also saw a yellow one in Los Alamos and a green one here in Socorro.

By the way, at what dealer did you get your car?

doccable 11-02-2003 07:28 PM

Hi all -
I'm just curious if anyone would be interested in setting up a meet in Ft. Collins some weekend soon, assuming the weather is good.
-Doc

serff 11-10-2003 04:13 AM

I've been drooling over the 8 since like January of this year. I haven't bought one yet (almost did in july, then my wife told me she was pregnant...:D ), but my heart is set on one. I should have one within a year, so it is good to hear there are other colorado people on here as well. We will all have to get together for a drive.

Digisan 11-10-2003 04:51 AM

Mountain people coming out of the woodwork, nice :)

serff 11-10-2003 05:24 AM

haha...nice. where you at digisan? I'm in denver. out by the airport

Hi, all,

I'm new to posting --just joined but frequent lurker. Love the vehicle, will probably buy before year end. Don't know if you'd want me to join a meet (I'm in Denver) but I'd love to check out what you think of your 8s.

BTW, now that it has snowed, anybody gone out? How is the car in snow? I'm spoiled by 4wd, but wonder if the 8 does ok in winter driving. Do you feel the need to buy snow tires? Thanks...

Welcome to the forum (or at least to posting)! ;) I'm in the same boat as you, don't own one yet, but really want one. Any way, about your question about the snow. There are a ton of posts from people in Canada saying that IF you have snow tires, the 8 drives great. Almost everyone that I have read says don't even try to drive it in the snow with the stock performance tires. you won't get any where except into a curb or someone elses car. I'm planning on buying either just snow tires, or probably 17" wheels and some blizzacks or something like that. The new wheels and tires might be cheaper in the long run, don't know though. haven't looked into it that much. I've just heard that 18" winter tires can run from like $800-1500.

Hope that helps. What kind of 8 are you lookin to get?

serff

Icanrel-8 11-24-2003 10:06 PM

Hey, thanks for the welcome! I already like it here.

I'm close enough to a decision on all the options, etc., to say that I'm going to buy a 6spd, probably a GT, with nav ( I work in real estate, so I can excuse it as a work requirement...), color Titanium or silver. Haven't chosen an interior color, so I'll probably see what's on the way in on the truck. Probably prefer black...

So if folks in Canada are dealing with snow, I can. Besides, there is only snow on the ground for a few actual days here, and I own a 1965 Land Rover for days when it may be too deep for Mazda.

Or, maybe I can just swap over my Rover's studded snows in the winter... give the car about 14 inches of clearance... the Rocky Mountain Edition RX-8! :D

Omicron 11-25-2003 11:54 AM

LOL!!!!!! :D :D :D I can just see an RX-8 with them big 'ol SUV meats on it!!! ROTFLMAO!!!! :D :D :D

Welcome, Icanrel-8. Glad to have you here.

Serff and Icanrel-8, as far as I'm concerned, you guys are BOTH welcome at a meet if and when we have one, regardless of whether or not you have an 8 of your own yet. If you think you'd like to come, please come over to the "Meet in Colorado?" thread one level up, here https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...threadid=14603 and put your name on unofficial list of interested parties.

doccable 12-02-2003 03:45 PM

I made the mistake of pricing snow tires, found out that pretty much no one makes tires that will fit the 18" wheels, at least of reasonable cost, that will fit into the wheel wells. I was told that I could buy a set of 17" wheels and snow tires starting around $1500... and that's before messing around with the tire pressure sensors... I think my RX will stay in the garage when it snows. :(

serff 12-02-2003 04:00 PM

does anyone know if it has been discovered that the 16" stock rims from the non-GT model will fit over the breaks of the GT? This might bring cost down too...

Omicron 12-02-2003 05:16 PM

Good idea Serff, but I have not looked into it. I drive my GC whenever the roads get crappy... not only because it has mass, traction, and 4 wheel drive, but also because it won't break my heart if someone hits me. If somebody did that to my '8, the way I feel aout it right now I'd prolly break down and cry on the spot. :)

Doc, I'm interested in snow tires too, and/or alternate wheels that'll work with the TPMS. I paid attention for a while in the wheel and tire forum, and came to the conclusion that I could either (a) spend a bunch of money to get wheels now that will accept the TPMS transmitters (like $500/wheel and up) or I could (b) get a set of replacement wheels from Mazda, same as what's on the car now, for about $400 each, including sensors, or (c) wait a year or so till more 18" rims are on the market.

I chose (c) because TPMS is becoming required by law in '05, so I figure pretty much all aftermarket wheels will be made to take the sensors by end of next year. Also this'll mean prices will come down. And finally, I need to force myself to drive my GC anyway or it'll just rot away. :D

BTW, there is a good deal on 18" snow tires on eBay... check this out: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2446406089 .

So Mazda factory wheels, $1600 + Dunlop M2 $400 = $2000. A set of used wheels in the "for sale" forum here seem to go for around $600 for a set of 4. Tire pressure sensors are $75-$100 each.

I've been watching the board for awhile. Just registered. Bought my car at Mazda of Lakewood in July. Winning Blue, everything except Nav. 6,200 miles, no issues. Previous Mazdas: '82 RX-7, '73 REPU, '90 Miata.

serff 12-08-2003 12:41 PM

nice, welcome to the board! How are you liking hte car so far?

Hey, welcome! And Mazda of Lakewood is where I bought MY car. :D

So you interested in joining us for a meet, sometime in the spring?

gpsvorndb 12-15-2003 09:59 AM

Sorry for the late reply. I've been offline for awhile.

A meet next spring would be fun. Or, anytime sooner providing the roads are in decent shape.

Omicron 12-15-2003 10:14 AM

Excellent! Keep an eye on the "Meet" thread in this forum for more info.

Landon_Starr 12-20-2003 12:54 PM

Meet...

I'd be interested in the meet, too....however, I'm in Utah. I'm assuming Fort Collins is in Colorado?

I bought the sport velocity Red, put custom aftermarket red/black leather interior, an upgraded sunroof (scary, I know), plus I've put on some 20" lexani roma wheels. I'm running S0-3 tires, which have the AQII technology, so I'm doing wonderful in the snow. Haven't had any serious snow as of yet.

I'm planning on piggybacking the ECU, possibly with Canzoomer's unit, throwing on the K&N intake, and exhaust by spring.

Omicron 12-20-2003 04:44 PM

Hey Landon, welcome, and congrats on the car!

I got your PM, and will be in touch about the meet. Fort Collins is indeed in Colorado, just North of Denver. Feel like making a road trip out here in the spring? :D

Hello there!

Congrats on the car! Even more so, congrats on finding the RX-8 Club.com site! I've only been here a couple of months, and have found a vast wealth of information available from the other 6600+ users on this board. I would also like to extend to you an invite to join in with us on this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...threadid=14603
We are working on a local club, and on there's more info about it here.
Again, welcome to the forum, I'm sure you're going to love the car, if you don't already! :D

I checked out the "Colorado" page here to see if I recognized anyone that I knew from my old RX-7 days. I grew up in Fort Collins where I had two 1st gen RX-7's. Colorado was such a great state to own a rotary in! So many interesting places and roads to drive. During May of '95, I followed two brand new Corvettes down from Estes Park before the tourist season. They were racing each other and I stayed on their back ends all the way down in my '84 GSL-SE. Now I'm out in the midwest trying to decide if I should get an RX-8 while I'm here? You are all very lucky to live in Colorado... Indiana just does not have any interesting roads to drive.

Hey Doc, have you ever been on the road between Encampment and Baggs, WY? When I was a kid it was a dirt road (my grandparents had a ranch near there), but in '94 it was paved. Every time that I would drive it after it was paved, there were hardly any cars, lot of curves... great for a RX. Just watch out since it's open range.

I plan on taking numerous trips all over the place when the weather decides to cooperate. Including from Laramie to Walden, then to Saratoga, and make the big (130 mile or so), "scenic trip" through the Snowys... Obviously, I can't do it right now, with the 30-mile stretch from Centennial Westbound being closed for the season. :( I haven't made too many trips yet, (having just got my 8 in October), aside from Laramie to Cheyenne on Happy Jack Rd., and of course, Laramie to Ft. Collins on US 287. Just did that today, that road is fantastic, even with the increased amount of traffic...
I've driven a whole lot of "open range" road since moving here five years ago... I've had a couple of close calls with both cattle, and antelope!
I think you need to buy yourself an 8, take some vacation time, and head out here for one of our "mini-meets", or the big meet we are planning. (No date set, we will be discussing this at our first mini-meet, visit our website link is on my signature!) We will be announcing possible future dates and locales soon!
If I may, why, DEAR GOD, MAN - why Indiana? :)

Hiya Blacksheep, WELCOME, and Congrats!!! on your '8. You're gonna love it!

I'm just down the road from you in Longmont, so I bet your '8 will be the first one I see on the road besides mine. I've had mine since 10/7 and have YET to see another one except at the dealership, and Doccable's car when we've gotten together. It's cool having such a unique, hot, and unusual car. What do you think of all the attention you get in your car?

Nice ta see ya here Grogie... I agree with Doc, you need to buy an '8 and take a road trip out here! :D

grogiefrog 01-11-2004 01:16 PM

Doc, I met my wife at CSU. She's a bio-chemist here with Dow AgroSciences. We're here until she retires in 24 years. We want to retire in Wyoming... somewhere around Laramie.

In Indiana they salt the roads so much in the winter. It just breaks up the roads and causes major rocks flying around, not to mention that there is a rock quarry that I go by on the way to work with a lot of uncovered dump trucks. Then being the "crossroads of the nation" we have A LOT of truck traffic. You can imagine the rock chips that my wife and I have on our cars. The country roads here are narrow, straight, and crowded... a bit boring. This just makes it hard to have a nice car. I loved my RX-7's, and I always wished that I could have bought one that was brand new to baby from the start. In '94 I bought a '84 GSL-SE, and it was so much fun. I can see that the RX-8 is everything that I wished that my '84 was. I do want an RX-8, but if I wait until Spring of 2005 it can be a weekend car that I can selectively drive (my current car will be paid off by then). Believe me, I am looking forward to road trips back to CO/WY. Currently each year we do drive back to see our families. My father-in-law owns an auto body shop in Denver and I tend to have him repaint a hood/fender on one our cars.

I use to love driving the roads that you mentioned. Great wide open roads. Do check out the road from Encampment to Baggs during the summer. One of the best roads that I have been on. Beautiful twisty road! Next time that you go through Saratoga, check out the Saratoga Inn. http://www.saratogainn.com

Plus, is there a Mazda dealer in Laramie, or did you buy from Fort Collins?

doccable 01-11-2004 01:51 PM

grogie,
Thanks for the link! Waaaay to cool!
I'm sure there are worse places to end up than Indiana... although, I can't think of too many, :D (Aside from most of the tornado alley states).
As far as dealerships go... no, there isn't a Mazda dealer here, and no, I didn't buy from Ft. Collins, I actually bought from a dealer in Colorado Springs; who delivered it to me, and gave me about 3k off the sticker!
Good idea on waiting until spring for buying an 8... mine is a weekend car only.
Just a suggestion; why not join the Rocky Mountain RX-8 club? We'd be happy to have you as a member! Just click on the link in red in my signature and follow the links on the site. What's you summer schedule looking like? We can probably schedule one of our mini-meets to coincide with one of your visits back this way!

Hey Blacksheep.

I beat you by one day (12/27 from Gateway Mazda). I am SW of Loveland & cruise to Longmont down CR23. Nice to know there are two in Loveland. This one is Silver. It's my second rotary with the first being an R-100...... and that is a story for another post.

Great Colorado postings... I'll be watching.... and waiting for dry mountain roads :-)
