CA 2010 RX-8 R3 with Mazdaspeed parts

Year: 2010
Make: Mazda
Model: RX-8
Price: $22500
Mileage: 60000
Color: Aurora Blue Mica
Private or Dealer Listing: Private Listing
Location (US State/Canada/Int): CA

Looking to sell my R3 with the mods below. I do have a handful of OEM parts as noted below. Located in So Cal (Palmdale-area). Runs and drives fine. I live out of state about half the year and don’t have the opportunity to drive her much. I don’t need to sell and would be just as keen to hold onto her as I do every few years when I consider selling. Currently has ~60,xxx miles. It would go up during visits as it’s my preferred car to drive when in town. Fresh oil change less than 50 miles ago from when I visited in April.

1) M'z Custom front bumper (this is based on the concept Mazdaspeed bumper that was never released) painted in Aurora Blue Mica with Stormy Blue Mica accents. I have the rear bumper skirts painted in Stormy Blue Mica, but they're not installed.

-The M'z Custom front bumper has clearbra installed.
2) Mazdaspeed wing (Stormy Blue Mica)
3) VIS Racing carbon fiber hood (this is what’s currently on it) with PPF protection film
-I also have the stock hood and a Seibon carbon fiber hood

4) Axial Flow short shifter
5) Raceseng weighted shift ****
-I also have the OEM Mazda shift ****
6) Viper LCD two-way alarm system

7) Huper Optik window tint 30%, 50% full front windshield
8) AEM Cold Air Intake (blue)
-metal BHR air box tray painted Aurora Blue Mica (instead of the stock OEM ugly plastic)
9) BHR ignition kit (installed at exactly 30,000 miles with new NGK iridium spark plugs at the same time)
-NGK iridium spark plugs changed again at 51,000 miles
10) LRB Speed aluminum undertray and uprights
11) Pioneer NEX 8200 head unit
-maintains steering wheel button controls and features electronic gauges (fuel, OBD II codes, air temps, etc)
12) Autoexe steering wheel
13) BHR midpipe
-I also have the OEM catalytic converter that was removed at 30k miles

14) TurboXS catback
15) Mazdaspeed front strut bar
16) Mazdaspeed rear strut bar
17) Mazdaspeed oil cap
18) rear OEM Mazda cargo tray
19) New in box BBS R3 wheel
20) Fumoto oil drain valve

These pics are from a few years ago, but no appreciable change. I’ll post new ones the next time I visit probably in mid-Nov.

Nice R3. I just bought a 2010 in the same color with 61k miles. Do you want to sell your OE catalytic converter?

Updated pics taken last week for folks who have DM’d me about the car. I swapped out the hood back to the stock hood to bring back the nostalgia of when I bought the R3 over 10 years ago. I still have the VIS Racing hood (and Seibon), but posted the VIS Racing for sale in a separate ad. Unfortunately, I was told someone had backed into the fiberglass bumper at some point after being placed outside waiting for the exterior detailer. Backgrounds of pics and license plate are defocused for privacy reasons.

and correction to mileage as it’s lower than what I originally posted: 58,xxx after driving to SevenStock and around SoCal last week. I’ll add on more miles on my trip next month.

Wow that's awful, really sorry to hear about the bad luck. Could you post more detailed pictures of the front bumper damage? Did you get an estimate?

Judging by your plate sticker, it appears this vehicle hasn't been registered for some years now? Any particular reason for this? Will you be including compression numbers? Also, whereabouts of the oem front bumper and trunk spoiler?

I think including this info will prove to be very helpful for all parties.

No estimate yet. It occurred the week leading into SevenStock. It’s an out of state plate as my residency is elsewhere the majority of the year. The car is registered every year. In fact, I had just put the new annual renewal sticker on the day before SevenStock (see pic).

I haven’t had a need to get compression #s as the car has always been great with hard and cold starts. I took videos the day I drove it to the Mazda dealership on 9 Nov for the recall service. I just need to find a website to post the videos and link them here. I own a compression tester which stays in FL where I just had a 20B built for my FD (RX-7). I’ll bring it on my next trip to SoCal in Dec to compression test.

I sold the OEM front bumper to a member of this forum years ago. That ad can be found in my post history. The OEM wing actually sits in the back seat when I’m not driving the car. All other parts are detailed in the original post.

Wait, so it's in California but registered in another state, probably Florida?

Meaning a California resident will have to smog it and pay registration fees?

If a California or resident of another state that requires a smog check buys it, then I’d imagine you need to do a smog check. I don’t understand your question about registration fees. That’s a requirement whenever you buy a car, new or used…

The only mod to the emission systems was the removal of the OEM catalytic converter at 30k miles. I do still have the OEM cat. Aside from that, the AEM intake has an approved CARB sticker so that’s not a concern plus it’s actually the one Mazdaspeed went with for their parts development. I brought the car to a smog station about two years ago just to see and it passed everything except the visual inspection (the high flow cat was in it) because I didn’t swap the OEM cat in. It passed the sniffer test.

Considering there are no other mods to the emissions system and I have the OEM cat, passing the full smog is not a concern. This car is not heavily modified.

To add a bit of "california smog" info to this.

Legal Intakes:
AEM
Racing Beat Revi intake w/o snorkel.

Exhaust Header:
None approved except OEM

Catalytic Converter:
Must be OEM or 50 state legal. The approved catalytic converters for California are very limited.

Cat Back Systems:
No cat back rules in place atm. Noise level is a federal rule and is being enforced differently per county. Possibly stricter in areas with higher incidents of street racing or take overs.

In California it is the seller's responsibility to smog the car prior to sale. However, it is hardly ever followed and is between the seller and the purchaser of the vehicle. Once you purchase a car in or out of state you would be paying sales tax on purchasing the car regardless. There are no additional fee's if the car is brought in from out of state. If it is coming from out of state, you would need to have the VIN verified prior to completing the registration. I find it's easiest to use the DMV services at AAA. You can become a member and use their services just by having their roadside assistance program.

The procedure for purchasing this car from out of state and registering it in California is the following:

1. Put on OEM cat.
2. Drive it around for a few days to make sure all self checks are complete. (if no CEL was present prior then the system should be good to go)
3. Have seller smog the car prior to sale. ( This smog check is good for 90 days and is electronically sent to California DMV )
4. New owner waits 1 business day to ensure DMV computer system is up to date with SMOG check certification ( the system is slow and I suspect they batch the smog checks in a nightly job )
5. New owner heads to local AAA office for VIN verification and registration transfer. ( New owner will walk out with new registration info, new title is mailed to new owner within a few weeks )

I've done out of state registration on cars coming into California more times than I care to admit. The process is super simple and with an Rx8 also incredibly easy. Passing smog in this state is super simple as long as you have CARB legal ugrades to your car. ECU / PCM flashing is also checked, however I've yet to see it enforced. If the car is already registered in California than you can skip step the VIN verification. I do recommend still using AAA DMV services to complete the title transfer. Going forward all registration is paid for online with biannual smog checks on cars older than 6 years.

Regarding the smog check, unless the car has been flagged as being modified (which I assume takes a few gross infractions), all OBD2 enabled cars manufactured from 2001 onwards are not required to be "sniff checked" as they did in the past. Now it's simply an OBD2 scanner tool that reads the smog checks withing the ECU. This is the only reason why I'm back in a rotary in California TBH. Just be sure to go to a smog check station that doesn't have the rollers or the old style of testing equipment. I go to a local shell station that has a repair shop in the rear. Takes 20 minutes and for $50 you're done before you can get lunch next door.

Thanks for that. I found the pic of when this car was smog checked. As you see in the comment section, the high flow cat wasn’t CA legal so the visual inspection was the only component it did not pass. I do still have the original OEM cat (and catback exhaust) that were both removed at 30k miles so no concerns about it passing a CA smog check. Also note the intake has an approved CARB sticker # notated in the comments. Feel free to contact AEM if you have any concerns about that common and approved intake swap.

Sorry, I was under the mistaken impression that registering an out of state car in California would cost a lot in transfer / registration fees.

I think it's pretty reasonable to expect a car to be registered and legal in the state where it's being driven and sold.

Well in this market this car could go anywhere in the US. And as you know each state has its own smog requirements. IF you were to buy this car I'm sure the seller would work something out with you or take care of this if you were in California. However, I doubt you'd be purchasing this car.. also if you had ever owned a rotary in the past you'd know the catalytic converters come off of these cars for various reasons. In this case there is a catalytic converter.. but a high flow version that doesn't meet California requirements.. yet does meet the requirements for the system self test, since there is not check engine light.

there have been a number of interested folks who’ve reached out within the past two weeks. Here are answers to frequently asked questions:

1) The R3 will be available for in-person and video showings Dec 18-23 and Jan 1-2.
—To not have time taken up by looky-lous, serious buyers should be prepared to provide proof of funds prior to meeting/doing a video call.
2) I will compression test with the RCT v5.2 on Dec 18 or 19 and provide the results here
3) I plan to smog on Dec 19 and will post the results here
4) I do not live in California most of the year and do not allow anyone else to drive my vehicles for liability reasons, hence why I mentioned my availability dates above.
—if it doesn’t sell by Jan 2, I’ll close the ad and may post it up again sometime in the future with whatever the adjusted market rate is at that time, but not less than what it is currently posted for now.
5. As of now, the only parts I’m open to selling separately would be the Seibon and VIS Racing hoods.

I got around to swapping in the stock cat and catback exhaust yesterday. I got it smogged today and it Passed. It’s ready for a California buyer. 👍

I also took pics while I had it on a lift yesterday.

I’m out of state again so this thread is being closed. Folks interested can continue to DM me questions. Funding gets brought up a bit so to be clear: the car won’t leave its place of storage until funding clears and is sitting in my account. The fastest way to for funding to clear is a weekday morning wire transfer. Afternoon transfers risk being delayed to the following business day.

I’ll create a new thread when my next long trip to So Cal gets finalized, likely in the late spring or winter. It’s stored in a secure location where others can facilitate showings on my behalf as long as proof of funds is shown in advance. Vehicle starts are doable, but I don’t allow test drives without my physical presence.
