My Wife Hates My 8
Am I the only one?
I bought my '04 LY GT in 2012 with only
18.5K on the odometer.
I drove it to the house on my initial test drive, she didn't even step out of the door.
She hated it immediately.
She said it was the standard "Midlife Crisis".
I was 52 at the time.
To avoid an argument, I brought it back and told them I didn't want it, which was a lie.
The next day at work I stewed on it all day, and then drove back to the dealership and bought it anyway.
Needless to say, 10 years later she still hates it, if not even more because I just sank a bunch of money into it to get it running again.
Am I the only one?

Mine liked it for the first 8ish years but little by little the shine wore off and she keeps hinting that we have could sell it. So I keep saying that it's not worth anything and that I would just replace it with another sporty car since we already have an SUV.
For the most part her objections are NVH and suspension harshness, which is pretty fair. It was better when stock. But she's almost never in it anyway, it's my runabout.

I think what helped is when we were first dating I involved her in car stuff. She helped me rebuild my old car's engine, lapped the valves, did some assembly. It was fun. She's less into it now because busier/hands dirty/back hurts/I'm too bossy, but she comes if I need someone to pump the brakes for a bleed or wash it on a nice day. If you involve them, they don't see it as competition.

This is a tough one.. the disconnect is money spent vs enjoyment. Many people, including my fiancé, don’t see it as a “wise decision”. Because the consensus is that spending money on a car is a waste of money. This goes into the whole societal view of “buy a house” bull ****.
What I did that stopped the disdain for spending money on the cars was to setup a budget. Each pay check I have automatically X dollars deducted and sent to a savings account named “Car Parts”.
This is my “slush fund” for all things hobby related. This is for racing.. this is for updates.. but this is my hobby money.. seeing the budget actually stopped a lot of the comments or dislike of spending money on a car.
Now hopefully you’re in a spot where your car is running… if so that car parts account will just grow to the point where there is new engine money set aside. I think this might also solve a lot of grief when it comes to spending money on the car since it doesn’t hit the household budget.
As to the partner not liking the car… my plan of attack is to do SCCA road rally events with her. Like cannonball runs, but no speeding. Getting them involved in a fun activity that involves the car is my ideal to help them appreciate the rx8.
You have to separate the mentality of it being just a car. And make it more into an instrument for enjoyment.

I dumped the chick I was dating when I bought my first 8... she said I had to pick between her or the car...

I bought her a ring, then she wanted me to buy the 8 I was looking at for over 6 months even though we are currently building a house. We both enjoy going on cruises in it and she realizes how happy it makes me to have a sports car again.

my wife is letting me do it bc we both got a decent bump in income recently and I have had my car paid off for a while now. We bought her a brand new Telluride a year ago. Plus i plan to use this car to spend time with my sons out on the backroads and down at the tail of the dragon. I did tell her that my car would increase in value. that helped...next fight we get in im sure this will be a topic lol...

77 cylinders, 4 rotors...
I usually don't post a vanity like this, but I'm gonna go for it.
My wife loves both of mine, esp. the blue one with the engine she recently saw me rebuild. She supported my motorcycle habits, (even when I was commuting full time in the winter in Washington and Montana!) watched me race bikes a few times at the dragstrip, and even supported having 2 minibikes in the living room near the tree at Christmas for our boys, which they still both say was their best Christmas ever.
In light of all that, surprisingly she doesn't weigh 250, chew tobacco, spit, and like Led Zeppelin. She is actually gorgeous, petite, and very fit. (she loves exercise, that is her thing, which I completely support.).
Both of us came from families with horrendous abuse, of all kinds, and multiple divorces. Because of that, we were (are) told we should not have made it this far.
I am very blessed by the Lord, and highly favored.
32 years of bliss...
