short shifter
anyone here own the RP short shifter? i signed up for the group buy today...i'd like to hear comments from anyone who owns the short shifter.

I have the very early batch from RP.
Intially when Richard talking about making one... I sort of said what an american knows about doing mod.
After trying Gomez's prototype. I ate my words and order one.
Had it for..... more than a year now. Love it. It does take a bit more force to shift but it is very short and very precise.
But I do have a problem. Good Noise and Bad Noise. And what a noise. It went wooooooo. Click... wooo.... haha
Then is the Bad Noise. Vibration, like metal locking noise at 9000rpm. Only on track though. Not on corners and not on street. Strange eh...?
Hymee sent me a cream shoe that are fit into all new ones now. It sort of solved the problem and the noise did not come back as loud....
The best is find a friend in the Gulf area and try it out...

I have one and I absolutely loved it until last week. For 24k miles the shifts were awesome and quick and the car was so much more fun to drive...
Last week I took my 8 to the dealership because the shifter was "loose." While checking to see if I was in neutral, I noticed no resistance AT ALL. The shifter could roll around in a circle in neutral and rested against the far left, when it should be resting in the middle between 3rd and 4th gears. It even heavily rattled while driving in gear. Not good. I took it apart and noticed the hole where the shifter drops into (I think it's the gear box and tranny, but not sure), wasn't a clear hole. The bottom hole was 1/4" - 1/3" over to the right, showing the edge of the bottom part through the hole of the upper part. The dealer said the movement was caused by the bearings in the short shifter. They're ordering me a new stock shifter and I should get my car back either today or tomorrow. If that fixes the problem, we know what the cause was. If not, then perhaps it wasn't the shifter after all.
In either case, the shifter was great and if it's not the cause of the problem, I'll be asking Richard to send me another.

Does the bottom of the shifter has a bear silver ball?
Dazy, it meant to have a black or creamy shoe on it. The early model has the black shoe and it can break and melt. Richard has the creamy shoe at the bottom that made with other material - which is fool prove

well i'm part of the group by now...do you guys think he has solved some of these issues...i really dont want to hassle with any problems in the future..if i buy something it better last as long as the car does...
let me know dazy if the tranny or the shifter caused your problem

Don't think it will cause any problem and the early prototype problem has been solved.
The shoe is the same size as the stock model - there is no way in the world that will affect the function of the tranny. It is just not logical. If the tranny stuff - it will be stuffed with the stock stick anyway.

Did the shop tell you what your problem was? I remember that my wife's Altima did that all of the time. There was a little "centering" spring down by the linkage that seemed to break all of the time, and it caused the same problems you describe. I've done that repair more times than I care to count. Of course, that's a FWD car. I doubt it's the same fix on a RX-8.

i have one as well and i love it too.. lol.. it's great.. i have one of the originals. i got mine about the same time tiff did and i havent had any problems.. i dont even know where my stock shifter is anymore..

After installing the creamy shoe, I instantly think it is sturdier, rock solid; although I don't have your problem to start with.

Maybe i'll harass richard about getting that part as well as the new midsection plastic piece.. he apparently has a wider version of that as well..
